Ko tā mātou mahi - Our Role
The Senior Advisor provides day-to-day support and advice to the Te Kurutao Regional Manager and the broader Te Kurutao team on research, policy, information requests, issues management and projects. They also engage with national teams across Kāinga Ora to ensure that the Regional Manager is kept well informed of matters that relate to the work programme of the region.
This position sits in Te Kurutao, whose role it is to ensure Kāinga Ora can fulfil its legislative obligations to protect and enable Māori interests and aspirations in relation to housing and urban development.

To be successful in this role the Senior Advisor will have
Mātauranga - Qualifications
- Preferably a bachelor's degree qualification or similar in a relevant field and/or relevant experience (working within Māori organisations);
- Be an expert in a chosen field, have a dedication, skillset and lived experience in a passion. Te tuakiritanga o te tangata - Personal attributes
- Be of a steadfast and resilient nature and have the ability to work in tight timeframes and challenging situations;
- Be flexible, adept and able to deal with ambiguity and complexity;
- Sound knowledge and understanding of contemporary dynamics of Māori Housing and experience working with Māori in housing or similar settings;
- Experience and skill in negotiations, relationship management, engagement and consultations;
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
- Ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences and build and maintain rapport with others.

Te Ao Māori - Māori skillset and experience
- Possess a competent ability in tikanga Māori and an inherent understanding of the implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the respective interpretations by iwi/hapu;
- Experience working with Māori organisations (1+years) and an enthusiasm for empowering and enhancing Māori capacity and capability to deliver on identified projects;
- E matau ana te tangata ki te reo Māori me ōna tikanga;
- Ideally be a fluent or native speaker of the Reo Māori, understand and be able to operate in a wide range of Māori environments;
- Experience in developing and supporting Māori projects;
- Sound knowledge and understanding of the history and impacts of colonisation including systemic bias;
- Understanding of iwi and Māori organisations and governance models and processes;
- Ability to educate, facilitate and communicate key messages that both enhance and grow the capability of Kāinga Ora staff to deliver impactful organisational outcomes in partnership with Māori;
- Ability to represent and/or lead Kāinga Ora in a range of situations including but not limited to; hui Māori, marae and Hapu/Iwi forums.
