As a Senior Monitoring Officer, you will be responsible for mentoring and training monitoring officers and managing a broad range of consented activities within the Waikato Region with an initial focus on
- Water takes
- Aquaculture
- Targeted monitoring projects

As a Senior Monitoring Officer within Waikato Regional Council, you will manage your own workload within targeted parameters, conducting site inspections, assessing environmental data, determining potential environmental effects, building relationships with our businesses and communities, coordinating technical specialists, following up on non-compliance, and reporting on outcomes.

Occasionally the role will require you to initiate an investigation of an offence, gather evidence and prepare documentation to support any enforcement action to be taken.

The ideal person will be able to work well in a team and more importantly demonstrate mentoring and leadership skills to assist the Team Leader. You will have good written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to build relationships with resource consent holders. An understanding of the issues affecting the Waikato Region and the role that regulation plays in protecting our environment is also important.

An understanding of Te Ao Māori and being able to demonstrate a clear commitment to working with Iwi to meet both our treaty obligations and the growing expectations of tangata whenua across the region are a must.

Relevant professional experience in resource management, or a related field would be advantageous.

**About you**:
A Senior Monitoring Officer will preferably have:

- A relevant bachelor’s degree in resource management, science, planning, or a related field.
- Five years applied experience in RMA compliance, or a related field, including experience with large, complex and controversial projects.
- Utilising skills, knowledge and communication/relationship building skills to assist in the effective training and guidance of less experienced staff.
- An ability to understand complex technical issues and communicate effectively, in situations that can be challenging.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare clear concise reports.
- Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to achieve practical outcomes within the boundaries of legislation.
- Experience undertaking investigations or enforcement would be desirable.
- An awareness of cultural issues in resource management and Tikanga Māori.
- Excellent time management, organisation, prioritisation, and proactive communication skills.
- Excellent Microsoft Office and software skills with the ability to troubleshoot problems.
- An ability to plan and schedule own work with little or no supervision and assist staff to manage their work.
- An ability to build positive relationships with stakeholders to achieve practical outcomes within the boundaries of legislation.
