Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Health Social Worker within the Child Health Service, to join our team at Wellington Hospital. This role is based in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) who treat and care for babies born after 23 weeks gestation and up to full term babies who are unwell or any newborn/neonatal infant requiring surgery. As this is a regional service babies throughout the Central Region of New Zealand can be admitted to NICU.
The Social Worker responds to a range of referrals for pēpē admitted to NICU and works with their whānau responding to issues such as trauma, child protection, family violence, grief and loss and complex social issues and medical needs. The role supports parents and caregivers with their adjustment to having a premature baby or a baby with a significant health issue. You will work in partnership with the NICU team and liaise with internal and external agencies to provide care and support for pēpē and whānau after discharge from the unit. The role includes providing support to whānau when their baby is at the end of their life. The role works with pregnant woman who are seen as outpatients by the Maternal Foetal Medicine Service.
The role will cover into Women - s Health, Paediatric Services and other areas of the hospital as required. And provide social work throughout Wellington Hospital for 6 hours on Saturdays on a roster, approximately 3-4 times a year paid at penal rates.

We are a team of 22 social workers based at Wellington Hospital who provide a service to patients and their whānau across inpatient, outpatient and community settings. We complete psycho-social assessments across the age range and provide holistic social work interventions. This role is well supported by the other Paediatric, Neonatal and Women - s Health social workers in the team. Come and join our friendly experienced team in a supportive workplace environment.

The successful applicant will have the following skills and attributes:
- NZ Registered Social Worker with current annual practicing certificate
- Minimum of 3 years social work practice
- The ability to complete psychosocial needs assessment
- Navigating and working within the legal requirements of health care and social work
- A clear understanding of the health needs of Māori and Pacific Island communities
- Therapeutic social work counselling experience (desirable)
- Previous work in a health setting and a good understanding of health social work (desirable)E pā ana ki a tatou - About us
