Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Develop a good understanding of the role of the Chief Ombudsman
- Six summer internships available in Wellington

Are you ready to gain valuable experience with the Office of the Ombudsman? This summer, we're offering six 13-week internship opportunities that will enhance your understanding of the Chief Ombudsman's role, and equip you with practical skills for your academic and professional journey.
Mō te Tari o te Kaitiaki Mana Tangata - About the Ombudsman
The Chief Ombudsman works with his staff to help New Zealanders in their dealings with government agencies. The focus is on handling complaints against government agencies, undertaking investigations and inspections, and encouraging good administration. The Chief Ombudsman is independent and impartial, with the goal of fairness for all.
Mō ngā tūranga - About the Internship roles
Our Kiingitanga/Summer Internship Programme, now in its fifth year, offers supervised placements with specific learning objectives. We also offer an internship stream for applicants from the disability community, alongside the Kiingitanga Internship.
Kiingitanga internship
We are proud to partner with Te Tari o te Kiingitanga. This internship is designed to enhance Māori engagement with our Office, infuse our work with invaluable Māori perspectives, and elevate the Office's reputation as an attractive employer for Māori tertiary students.
Lived experience of disability internship stream
We're also once again seeking an intern from the disability community. This stream is important because it aligns with the Chief Ombudsman's role under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Additionally, we greatly value the unique perspectives that individuals with lived experiences bring to our work.
Application instructions
Mō ngā rōpū mahi - About the Internship teams
Intake and Early Assistance Join a large and diverse team specialising in managing high volumes of written and phone complaints. You'll primarily support the intake process, working closely with four team members for guidance and mentorship. Each day brings new complaints and inquiries to analyse and address, in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Information Knowledge ManagementJoin us if you're curious and eager to delve into Information Management within a Parliamentary Office. This internship offers hands-on experience in records management, data analysis, and library processes, allowing you to contribute to key projects and develop essential professional skills. Gain invaluable insights and make a meaningful impact in a supportive and dynamic environment.
Legal You will have exposure to a range of public law issues like no other organisation in New Zealand. We use the law in a practical and pragmatic way to support the Ombudsman's mission of fairness for all. The team has five lawyers with heaps of experience in a range of public law and policy roles who will all provide mentoring and support to you. There are lots of great opportunities for you to contribute to the development of the team and of course, lots of legal research and writing needs.
People and Capability - Health, Safety and WellbeingJoin us if you're curious and passionate about health, safety and wellbeing in a corporate environment. This internship offers hands-on experience in health and safety management, policy development, and risk mitigation. Work closely with our experienced Senior Advisor, Health and Safety, and contribute to key projects that enhance organisational wellbeing. Gain invaluable insights and make a meaningful impact in a supportive and dynamic team.
Proactive Intervention & Monitoring Join us if you're curious, analytical and enjoy reading. You will be involved in reading and summarising a variety of reports produced by public sector agencies in New Zealand and overseas to help our teams understand how these reports inform the proactive side of the Ombudsman. Your work could be linked to particular investigations and inquiries or be of a more general nature.
Our experienced teams will develop and support your learning across different aspects of proactive intervention including problem definition, early resolution, practice improvement and systemic investigations, with a focus on the research that can inform these.
Rōpū Māori Hononga HaporiIn this internship, you'll play a crucial role in gathering, analysing, and presenting information from various reports that will directly contribute to the development and implementation of our Māori engagement practices. You'll actively assist in coordinating the Te Ao Māori Strategy and collecting valuable insights from internal groups to shape tikanga-informed practices.
Please see the specific schedule of duties you are interested in for more detail about each internship.
