**Mō te tūnga | About the role**

The Department of Anaesthesia consists of 84 Specialist Anaesthetists, 5 Medical Officers/Provisional Fellows, 26 Anaesthetic Registrars, 6 Senior House Officers, Anaesthetic Technicians, 2 Staff Nurses and 3 Secretarial/Administration staff.

The Department is based at Christchurch Hospital and provides anaesthetic services to Canterbury. The Department provides Anaesthetists for locations spread between Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women's Hospital (High-Risk Obstetrics) and Burwood Hospital (Orthopaedics & Plastics/Max-Fax). The annual workload consists of approximately 26,000 anaesthetics per year, of which approximately 40% are acute admissions.

We are fully accredited for all levels of training by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and have strong academic links with the University of Otago through the Christchurch School of Medicine. Registrars based at Christchurch are also rotated to Intensive Care and Timaru Hospital on a 3-6 monthly basis. Trainees gain exposure to the full range of anaesthesia sub-specialties including:

- Paediatrics
- Neurosurgery
- Vascular and Interventional
- Complex Head and Neck surgery
- Cardiothoracic Surgery

**Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills & Experience**
- You will have completed PGY2 by January 2025 and have six months experience in anaesthesia at a Senior House Officer level or beyond.
- You must be eligible for ANZCA training registration.
- Knowledge and commitment of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how the principles can be applied to health.
- A willingness to grow and further develop an equity lens and skillset, both to assist Māori and minority groups.
