Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Deputy Controller & Auditor-General

The Controller and Auditor-General is an Officer of Parliament, who acts independently of the Government. This statutory Deputy position is also an Officer of Parliament.
The Office of the Auditor-General Te Mana Arotake (OAG) plays a crucial role, supporting public confidence as an independent ‘watchdog'. The purpose of OAG is “to improve trust and promote value in the public sector”.
The organisation's two business units, the Office of the Auditor-General and Audit New Zealand, work together to give Parliament and the public an independent view of how effectively over 3,300 public organisations are operating and how circa $150 billion of public money is managed.
Auditing is the organisation's main role, carried out by Audit New Zealand and other service providers, on behalf of the Auditor-General. The Office of the Auditor-General conducts inquiries, research and performance audits. Providing assurance that departmental spending is aligned with Parliament's expectations is also a key accountability.
Priorities include examining and reporting on how the public accountability system is working at a holistic level, how effectively the public sector is improving the lives of New Zealanders, keeping us informed about public sector performance and accountability, and sharing insights regarding ‘what good looks like'.
The Deputy Auditor-General does not need to be an auditor, but to exercise statutory responsibilities, does require an appreciation of the philosophies and practices that underpin public sector financial and non-financial reporting. To be considered as a credible appointee, you will require:

- Established credibility from a successful, executive level background, most likely from within the state sector, with strong credentials in public management, accounting, or law
- Exposure to complex multi-disciplinary environments, with experience leading expert teams involved in the delivery of rigorous reporting and advice at the highest levels
- Superb judgement, integrity, courage, and nuanced stakeholder management skills, with the ability to synthesise complexity and articulate ideas in plain language
- The ability to operate collegially with executive team colleagues, who hold collective accountability for organisational leadership, strategy, performance, and culture.
