About the role

NZ Police are offering an exciting opportunity to join the Police Prosecution Service (PPS) as a Prosecutor in Tairāwhiti within the Gisborne PPS office.

With PPS you will gain a sound knowledge of prosecution processes including case management and advocacy, along with court practices. You will be part of a diverse group of constabulary prosecutors and police employees including lawyers, support staff and managerial staff.

You will appear in a number of different courts including the Gisborne, Wairoa, and Ruatoria District Courts, the Family Harm Intervention Court, and Youth Court. Dependent on your skill and experience level, you will be involved in court advocacy ranging from first appearance courts, Judge’s lists, Young Adult Lists, Community Magistrate Lists, arrest lists, sentencing lists, case review hearings, and Judge Alone Trials.

In addition, you will be involved in file analysis, and case management processes to ensure prosecution files meet the Solicitor General guidelines in terms of evidential sufficiency and public interest. This will involve liaising with police investigators and defence counsel.

- Decision Making - using critical thinking and problem solving skills to make sound decisions,inlcuding the ability to think on your feet and respond appropriately under pressure, including in a courtroom setting.
- Law and Policy - the ability to analyse complex information around law and policy accurately and in a timely manner, including relevant legislation and case law, PPS policies and NZ Police policies.
- Individual Responsibility/Accountability - Taking responsibility for your development by seeking opportunties to develop your own knowledge, skills and experience; and being accountable for your performance.
- Leadership/Enabling Others - Recognising the importance of your role as part of a high performing team and sharing your skills, knowledge and experience to enable others.
- Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Marama - New Zealand Police and PPS are committed to the Treaty (Te Teriti O Waitangi). There is a strong focus on Te Ao Māori (the Māori world view) and Te Ao Marama. The Gisborne District Court is one of the first courts in Aotearoa New Zealand to adopt the Te Ao Marama model of justice instigated by the Chief District Court Judge. It is a justice system that uses plain language, is based on Tikanga Māori, kaupapa Māori, whanaungatanga and resolutions, so that everyone who comes to our courts to seek justice feels seen, heard, understood, and is able to participate in a meaningful way.

**Special Requirements**:

- The successful applicant will be required to undergo a full reference and security check prior to any offer of employment being made
- Some out of town travel may be required from time to time
- If you are a Police Employee applicant, you must have an LLB degree and have the ability to get a practicing certificate and provide copy of qualification eligibility.
- If you are a Constabulary applicant, you must have a current Sergeants CPK or be a substantive Sergeant, or be fully qualified under a previous promotion scheme. You will also hold currency in PITT, PCT and First Aid certificates.
