- Contribute to positive climate action in Aotearoa
- Join a team of climate change experts, thought leaders in their field of study
- Use your sharp mind and keen analytical skills in crucial and meaningful mahi
**Mō mātou | About us**:
He Pou a Rangi | The Climate Change Commission (the Commission) is an Independent Crown Entity established under the Climate Change Response Act 2002.
We provide independent, expert advice to the Government of Aotearoa on both mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change, and we monitor and review the Government's progress towards its emissions reduction and adaptation goals. The Commission plays a key role in developing and implementing clear and stable climate change policies in Aotearoa.
In the past two years we've provided advice on the first three emissions budgets, the direction of the first emissions reduction plan, agricultural emissions pricing, and NZ Emissions Trading Scheme settings. We are now expanding our work programme. More details can be found here: Our upcoming work » Climate Change Commission (climatecommission.govt.nz)
He Pou a Rangi Climate Change Commission received an additional funding in Budget '22 to support delivering our expanded work programme. We are using this funding to increase our analytical capacity. We are seeking great people to join us to deliver on the Commission's expanded role.
**Ngā Tūnga | The Role**:
The Commission has an important role in advising the Government of the day on the emissions reductions pathway for Aotearoa, and to monitor and report on Aotearoa's short and long-term progress in addressing climate change. That includes advising on, and monitoring progress towards meeting emissions budgets, emissions reduction plans and the 2050 target, as well as reporting on progress with adaptation. The Commission's approach needs to reflect Aotearoa's own unique circumstances, learning from our journey so far and weaving in international experiences and lessons.
This role is based in the Emissions Budget team, reporting to the Team Manager-Emissions Budgets. This is an exciting opportunity for a Principal Analyst to contribute to the Commission's next advice on emissions budgets and the monitoring function, including the delivery of its first emissions reductions monitoring product. Ideally, you would have experience working on climate change or another system-level topic, using a range of quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques (including modelling), and be comfortable working with data. Engagement with stakeholders, both inside and outside Government, will be important to ensure the design and delivery of the Commission's products and advice are robust and fit for purpose.
A key priority for the Commission is te ao Māori. This means we work with our Treaty partner and grow our capability and capacity to accurately reflect Māori views and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our work.
**Mō ēnei tūranga mahi | The role will involve**:
**You will lead or contribute to**:
- Framing and communicating advice in a way that recognises the needs and concerns of the audience.
- Making sound, timely decisions that keep the organisation and work moving forward.
- Leading and contributing to multiple pieces of work concurrently.
- Supporting other Commission staff and contributing to the expert analysis provided to the Board, taking on feedback, and making enhancements to enable effective decision making.
- Engaging with iwi/Māori in a manner that upholds Tikanga and recognises the Crown - Māori partnership under the Treaty of Waitangi.
**Ō pūmanawa | About you**:
**You will have the following**:
- Strong knowledge and experience of a range of research, evidence and analytical methods, including emerging and innovative approaches and frameworks
- Sound judgement and awareness of the context within which advice is formulated and communicated
- Strong logic and reasoning skills to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions
- Highly developed communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience working in climate change mitigation in a policy or applied environment
- Experience using a range of quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques (including modelling), and comfortable working with data
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation, including the design of systems and tools, in either the private or public sector; and potentially in a climate change and/or te ao Māori context
- Strong understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, te ao Māori and experience engaging with Iwi/Māori
- An understanding of government processes, systems and tools
- A relevant tertiary qualification, preferably post-graduate, or equivalent experience.
