**Āu Mahi | What You Will Do**
You will be part of a vibrant and dynamic advising team within UC's student hub, Te Pātaka. You will be responsible for whakawhanaungatanga, building relationships, with first year ākonga with a special focus on key equity cohorts including Māori and Pacific students. The manaakitanga you provide will ensure culturally responsive, accurate, and timely academic advice and support, empowering students in their successful transition to tertiary study and beyond. You will provide proactive and customised support to improve retention and achievement. You will contribute to an advising community of practice that seeks to improve systems, processes, and practices across the university to enhance ākonga learning experiences.
**Mōu | Who You Are**
To be successful in this role you will have a commitment to uphold UC's values, and will have the following skills and experiences:
- Bachelor's Degree (NZQA Level 7) or above, preferably in education, psychology, social work or other relevant field or equivalent employment experience.
- Active commitment to upholding the values, tikanga, and kawa of cultural practice and traditions as guided by mana whenua, Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu.
- Competency in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga is an advantage.
- Proven experience in pastoral care or a similar support role. Experience in counselling, coaching or teaching is an advantage.
- Experience working with priority learners or underserved communities.
- An understanding of the academic, social and cultural needs of ākonga Māori and Pacific and an ability to engage successfully with ākonga who have diverse needs.
- Commitment to enhancing bicultural and intercultural competence and effectiveness.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build rapport and network in diverse contexts.
- Exceptional organisational and administrative abilities, meeting deadlines effectively.
- Experience in collaborative, fast paced work environments and demonstrated contributions to team success.
- A strong passion for improving and enhancing the overall student experience, retention and engagement.
- Effective reflective practice and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess and enhance individual and team performance.
- Confidence and competence with IT, particularly across the MS Office suite.
- Ability to preserve confidentiality and abide by the requirements of New Zealand Privacy legislation.
