Te Kaunihera o Tāmāki Makaurau/Auckland Council has a senior leadership opportunity for an Associate General Counsel (Property) reporting to the General Counsel in Ngā Ratonga Ture/Legal Services.

The Associate General Counsel (Property) leads our core property law team of 8-10 lawyers and legal executives, supporting the core transactional, landowner and advisory work of Auckland Council, Eke Panuku and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited.

Auckland Council is the largest local authority in the Southern Hemisphere and is New Zealand’s main urban “growth” council. The challenges and opportunities in the transactional property and land advisory areas are significant.

On any day, we work on projects touching on Tāmaki Makaurau’s waterfront, regional parks, community facilities, co-management with iwi, film studios, major events, marae developments, commercial and residential developments, as well as climate adaptation, mitigation, and response work.

With 1000 active matters, the workflows include advice, acquisitions and disposals, developments, JV’s, commercial and community leasing, licensing, easements, encumbrances, and statutory compliance. You’ll become familiar with the Reserves Act, Public Works Act, Local Government Act, Council delegations and allocations.

As Associate General Counsel (Property) you will be responsible for managing key internal client and stakeholder relationships, be able to present confidently at political and board meetings, and effectively manage external law firm budgets. You will be an active member of the Legal Services Lead Team and council’s Enterprise Leaders Group.

This is a new role created by moving our existing property lawyers into a standalone team to meet increased volumes of work (including the buy-out and other response programmes resulting from the severe weather events of 2023), and to provide dedicated management of these workstreams with increased efficiency.

**He kōrero mōu: About you**

Collaborator and learner, you’ll mentor our stable of experienced and skilled senior property lawyers, as well as being able to work closely with lawyers in Legal Services, with elected members, wide range of business units and managers at all levels.

You will demonstrate strong inter-personal skills, organisational awareness, sound risk assessment and judgment, and be committed to developing and supporting a high-performing team and business unit.

While local government experience is not required, you will have significant transactional property law expertise, and experience working in large corporates, public sector organisations, or major law firms.
