Christchurch, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Be the face of Awaroa/Godley Head
- welcome visitors and maintain this WW2 coastal defence heritage site and associated visitor assets.
- Live on-site in the recently refurbished one bedroom Caretakers Cottage.
- Two-year fixed term, part-time role (16 hours per week).

Toitū te marae a Tāne-Mahuta, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata
If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.
Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

He angitūtanga | About the role
Awaroa/Godley Head is a WW2 coastal defence heritage site with campground, Lighthouse Cottage (bookable accommodation) and popular coastal loop walk a 30-minute drive from Christchurch. The facilities were shut in 2021 due to asbestos contamination. Over the past 18 months, the Caretakers Cottage has been upgraded and asbestos remediation works have taken place. The site is now safe to re-enter, and DOC staff are busy tidying up the area so we can re-open it to the public (expected sometime in July or August).
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a passion for conservation to get hands on and make a difference every day in a truly iconic site.

**In this role you will**:

- Work alone and/or as part of a team to maintain visitor assets (e.g. mow, cut tracks, control weeds, clean toilets/accommodation) and protect heritage assets (e.g. lock the gate, remove graffiti, support with heritage improvement projects, and be a DOC presence on-site to deter vandals).
- Be the public face of Awaroa/Godley Head. Make visitors feel welcome, manage ad-hoc visitor enquiries, and check campers have paid their fees.
- Create and maintain positive working relationships with district Recreation/Historic Rangers.
- Manage the effects of visitors to the site and communicate issues as they arise back to the team.

This 16-hour per week part-time role is ideal for someone who has an alternative source of income. Own a Coffee Cart and want to park this at Godley Head? Have an online business? Work part-time in Sumner or Lyttleton? Semi-retired or studying?
The caretaker has the use of the historic Medical Inspection building that has been converted into a comfortable one-bedroom cottage. This is rented to the caretaker at market rates (your partner can also live on-site by agreement). It can be furnished or unfurnished.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
If you have some of the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

- Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to communicate professionally with members of the public.
- Have a practical background with the ability and physical fitness to be able to carry out a variety of caretaking tasks.
- Confident to make decisions and able to work autonomously.
- Basic computer skills and an ability to use a smart phone.
- Full New Zealand driver licence.

**Desirable**:

- LUV, 4WD, Growsafe and First Aid certificates.

Even if you don't tick all the boxes but believe your skills and experience closely align, then we still encourage you to apply. Training in the use of equipment will be provided.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you?
The Department of Conservation /Te Papa Atawhai places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow. We're working towards being an organisation that is diverse, equitable and inclusive by default.
