Principal solicitor role to work on high-profile legislative projects
Who are we?
DIA's Legal Services Team sits in the Organisational Strategy and Performance (Te Urungi) branch, which helps the Department to define and achieve its strategic objectives. Te Urungi, refers to a rudder or steering paddle of a waka and reinforces the role of our Branch in navigating towards the future. We provide advice and assurance to the Executive Leadership Team, and the wider Department regarding core aspects of good business management that underpin the Department's success. We lead strategic planning and performance reporting, the implementation of Te Tari Taiwhenua's Māori Strategic Framework, and we advise on legal risks, the performance of the governance, risk and assurance system, and portfolio planning and performance.
The DIA Legal Services Team consists of two teams, the Policy and Regulatory Team and the Commercial and Corporate Law team.
What is the role?
This role is for a Principal Solicitor (Policy and Legislation) in the Policy and Regulatory Team which consists of 8 lawyers. It is a fixed term role or a secondment opportunity for a period of 12 months.

**In this role you will**:

- take the lead in overseeing the team's work across multiple policy and legislative projects of different sizes and complexity; and
- report to the Manager of the Legal Policy and Regulatory team about legal risk relating to any policy and legislative projects;
- be responsible for advising on your own policy and legislative projects by supporting the development and progress of legislation through the Parliamentary process;
- have responsibilities in supporting the development of legislation in the Three Waters reform programme;
- engage with internal clients to get visibility of upcoming legislative projects;
- build effective and robust professional relationships with clients and external stakeholders;
- share knowledge and experience with others on the team and clients through mentoring and developing training programmes;
- have the opportunity to provide advice on regulatory matters.

What are we looking for from you?

**We are looking for someone who**:

- is ready to step into a leadership role as a principal solicitor;
- has solid legislative development experience and understands the challenge and time pressures that come with these types of projects;
- is capable of switching between being a high-level policy thinker and being detail-focused reviewer of legislation;
- is excited about helping get projects across the line and is capable of influencing and leading others from the side-lines;
- is passionate about mentoring and sharing their knowledge and expertise with others;
- is a qualified barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand;
- has a current practicing certificate or the ability to hold one.

What's in it for you?

**In this role you**:

- can have a flexible working arrangement;
- will enjoy meaningful work with a lot of variety;
- will have a great deal of autonomy while having access to support and development opportunities;
- will work with a tight-knit team of lawyers who are passionate about their work but also like to have a good laugh.

Salary is up to $145,000 depending on skills and experience.
We are an equal opportunity employer that values diversity and inclusion. We recognise a diverse workforce contributes to better business outcomes. We are committed to creating a workplace where all employees have equal access.
If you would like to discuss the role, please get in touch with Tania Nedelcheva-Pearson to arrange a time for a confidential discussion.
