We work closely with government, industry, consumer, and stakeholder groups to develop and provide access to standards that shape and improve the lives of all New Zealanders. Standards help make life safer and easier. They improve the effectiveness and reliability of many goods and services used every day.

Standards New Zealand is the New Zealand member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Membership of the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) is via the IEC National Committee of New Zealand (NCNZ).

There are many benefits for New Zealand in active participation in international standardisation. International Standards generally reflect the best experience of industry and regulators worldwide and cover conditions in a variety of countries. Participation in international standards development ensures New Zealand’s interests are voiced in the development of International Standards. This facilitates the international exchange of goods and services.

- Establishing and managing processes to ensure that New Zealand meets its membership/agreement obligations within international standards organisations, such as the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
- Ensuring there are effective committees in place and that the right people (experts) are participating as effectively as they can with the right support.
