We are now looking for a Principal level professional who specialises in carbon advisory and net zero to join our Advisory Climate Change team in Auckland, New Zealand, to play a lead role in developing and delivering our services in this area.

Role Responsibilities

Take a lead role in broadening and developing our Carbon and Net Zero advisory services, including in relation to climate risk, transition planning, nature based solutions and the circular economy

Lead carbon and climate change projects and project teams, including those that involve whole life carbon assessments and carbon management implementation in infrastructure projects, across sectors.

Provide technical expertise and strategic advice to clients to align their policies, strategies, plans and business processes to achieve their climate change objectives, net zero ambitions and climate risk disclosure requirements.

Engage clients, and proactively support business development activities - identifying opportunities, positioning the team, and leading / supporting the production of winning proposals

Work collaboratively both internally with engineer domains and digital ventures and externally across client, supplier’s industry organisations and regulators

Contribute to management, mentoring and recruitment of junior staff. Line management is not envisaged initially but could be included as part of the role over time.
- What we would like to see from you:
Essential

Degree or post-graduate qualifications in a discipline relevant to carbon and net zero, or equivalent professional experience
Knowledge of:
Aotearoa New Zealand’s legislation and policy related to carbon, net zero, climate change and climate risk disclosure.

International frameworks, best practice, methodologies and standards associated with carbon management, net zero and climate change, such as ISO14064, the GHG Corporate Protocol, PAS2060, PAS2080, and the SBTi’s Net Zero Standard.

Carbon assessment and reduction tools such as eTool, One Click LCA and the Moata Carbon Portal (our in house tool for calculating carbon in infrastructure assets), and related data sets including from BRANZ and MfE.

Industry initiatives/project/commitments to reduce the carbon impact of energy, transportation, construction, and the built environment (and ideally participation in such endeavours).
Experience in:
Leading the delivery of major infrastructure and/or corporate carbon assessments, greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory projects and emissions reduction target setting.

Leading the delivery of carbon management and net zero projects across a range of project types, demonstrating successful delivery against scope, quality, and budget.

Client engagement at senior levels and delivering an appropriate message to the intended audience.

Business development, preparing proposals and winning work.
Qualities and skills

Capacity for flexible delivery - ability to think strategically “big picture” as well as deliver shorter term detail.

Collaborative, self-reliant and willingness to be proactive. Ability to take responsibility and own the delivery of projects and workflows

Excellent communication skills, including report writing and client presentations

Excellent numerical and analytical skills, including the use of Excel and other tools
Desirable

In depth experience related to one or more of Mott MacDonald’s core sectors - transport, built environment, water and energy.

Knowledge of low-carbon materials/processes/innovations in construction and the built environment

Knowledge of international and New Zealand climate risk disclosure frameworks and implementation (TCFD, XRB)

Knowledge of physical climate change risks, adaptation and resilience strategies, and experience in climate change risk assessments (including types and availability of climate data)

Knowledge of the circular economy and experience of implementing resource efficiency and circular economy strategies

Knowledge of carbon offsets, nature-based solutions and GHG removal approaches and technologies

Knowledge of financial aspects of carbon management

Membership of a relevant professional institution

Experience in managing and recruiting junior staff.
