Waikato Hospital is a provider of secondary and tertiary health and disability services to the Waikato District and the wider Te Manawa Taki region. The population base for the Waikato areas is 425,000. The catchment for advanced trauma specialties in the broader Te Manawa Taki region is 1,007,000. Waikato Hospital is an accredited level 1 trauma centre, the only one in New Zealand.

The Fellow forms an integral part of the Waikato Trauma Service that provides clinical care and advice to major trauma patients admitted to Waikato Hospital, and has close links to other hospitals in the Te Manawa Taki Region through the Te Manawa Taki Trauma System. The Trauma System maintains a detailed trauma registry and provides excellent learning and research opportunities. The Te Manawa Taki Trauma Research Centre has an active research program that the trauma fellow will be involved in during the appointment.

The Fellow will be included in the after-hours registrar roster for general surgery, excluding night duty.

Applications are called from doctors who are registered with the New Zealand Medical Council and are qualified in general surgery to FRACS level or equivalent.
