Want to help make a difference for iwi and Māori in our region?
Waikato Regional Council is looking for a skilled and experienced Kaitohutohu to step into a role within Tai-ranga-whenua. T he team provides an overarching pathway for Māori engagement with a focus on enabling council’s responsiveness to Māori in delivering its responsibilities.
Fluency in te reo Māori, applied experience in kawa, tikanga ā-iwi and mātauranga Māori is desirable as is experience with local government.
**Mō te tūranga | About the role**
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and leading strategy and policy to ensure council’s obligations to Māori are met, to preserve and strengthen partnerships with Māori and communities across the region.
This role is varied in its focus to:
- Grow, enhance and improve Waikato Regional Council’s capability, systems and processes that contribute to its strategic goals of working with iwi Māori.
- Work with council and iwi partners to support their capacity and capability building.
- Develop cross-cultural educational programmes for Waikato Regional Council.
**Mō te tangata | About you**
You will, have leadership experience in Māori engagement, understanding of tikanga Māori, and ability to operate with Māori and non-Māori political environments with proven ability to advise on te ao Māori. You will also have experience in the development of systems and processes that assist iwi Māori-focused policy development and integration in a co-management context, whilst working with council and iwi to support their capability building to fulfil their partnership aspirations.

- Strength in te reo me ona tikanga
- Existing Māori networks in the Waikato region
- Knowledge of the Waikato region
- Previous experience or working knowledge of local government
- Related post-graduate qualification
- Demonstrated knowledge of Resource Management Act and/or policy development processes
