Ko mātou tēnei | Who we are
Te Komihana Tauhokohoko | The Commerce Commission is New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency. Our mission is to make New Zealanders better off by ensuring our markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident participants in those markets.
The Commission is going through an exciting period of growth, driven by increases in its functions, duties and powers, and supported by additional Government funding.
A new area is the work we do on payments. We have newly created manager and senior-level adviser roles available due to a growing team. These are key roles that will provide leadership, help set our strategic direction and be responsible for delivering an exciting work plan. You'll be working with an awesome team of people that have different skills, experience and personalities
You'll work in our Market Regulation Branch where we want to see markets working well for all New Zealand consumers. These are permanent positions, based in our Te Whanganui-a-Tara, or Tāmaki Makaurau, office with flexible working options available.
Mō te tūranga | About the roles
We have two Manager roles available reporting through to the Head of Payments:
- The Payment System Performance Manager will oversee our monitoring work that assesses how the retail payment system is performing for New Zealand businesses and consumers. You'll find ways to get the right information and make it sing for different audiences - shining a light on the fees that get passed on by banks and other payment providers, helping small businesses and consumers make informed choices on their payment options, or identifying parts of the market that aren't working as well as they could be. The role is also responsible for monitoring compliance with the regulatory rules that are set.
- The Payment Regulation & Engagement Manager will oversee our regulation-making functions and a range of economic regulatory tools to help address market issues in the payments industry. You'll find elegant solutions to some interesting challenges about pricing, network access or information transparency. You'll also be leading our engagement and education campaigns that deliver behavioural changes.
As one of these managers, you'll provide people leadership to a multi-disciplinary team of advisors, analysts and/or investigators.
We have two Chief Advisor roles, reporting through to each of the managers, to provide thought leadership and be a driving force in the delivery of our work in the these two teams. You'll understand how markets work and what it takes to get them working for everyone. Amongst your repertoire of skills and experience are expert conceptual thinking, problem-solving and communication skills.
All of these positions are important leadership positions within the team, and you will play a critical part to ensure that the retail payments system is competitive, efficient and capable of supporting continued innovation for the benefit of consumers, businesses and the broader economy.
You'll work collaboratively with different skillsets in our multidisciplinary team, as well as across other branches in the organisation. You'll need to be comfortable working with legal and economic regulatory concepts, be able to wrap your head around this complex system and deal with ambiguity. You'll engage with a diverse set of stakeholders and also have direct engagement with our decision-makers, the Commissioners.
He kōrero mōu | About you
You'll possess a range of attributes that will make you successful in these roles:
- natural leadership as well as team player
- strong analytical skills, and a proven ability to operate and deliver results in a multi-disciplinary environment
- well-honed skills in strategy and policy development
- excellent written and presentation skills
- effective relationship management and engagement skills, and used to working with a wide range of stakeholders
