**Software Engineer - Intermediate to Principal**:
**Firstly, a bit about us**

Airways provides air traffic control over the 30 million square kilometres of New Zealand’s airspace, operating as a commercial organisation (an ‘ANSP’ - Air Navigation System Provider), owned by the New Zealand government and people. Airways was the first commercially organised ANSP and has a global reputation for innovation and agility.

Air Traffic Controllers use an Air Traffic Management (ATM) system to control aviation traffic. Airways is one of the few ANSPs world-wide which supports in-house the full engineering of its ATM systems.

**About the role**:
This role is for a software engineer in the small team which develops the ATM system controlling the land mass and immediate surrounding airspace of New Zealand.

A new generation of the ATM system is being developed in partnership with a large American manufacturer. Throughout the lifetime of ATM systems technological and operational change is unrelenting, requiring continual improvement and development of the system.

The team operate a flexible and pragmatic development process, supporting a scheduled ATM software release every 8 weeks since 2003; over that period having zero software rollbacks and only two releases deployed late (by 24 hours). The toolset includes Git, Gerrit, Redmine, Jenkins, Ansible, and multiple other tools.

- The ATM system is technically complex and very interesting.
- All software development for this ATM is done by a team of ten engineers in Christchurch, co-sited with New Zealand’s main Air Traffic Control Centre
- As part of the team you work in close partnership with a dedicated team of controllers and pilots responsible for operational requirements and acceptance testing; and with system engineers, network engineers, and other specialist engineers supporting the multiple technologies employed.
- Your software changes are deployed regularly to the live Air Traffic Control system, for the immediate use of aviation traffic, Controllers, and the technicians who monitor and control the system.
- Airways pays well and values its engineers. A hybrid working model provides flexibility and support.

These software engineering positions are rarely offered.

**To be successful, you will need to have**:

- An honours or master’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or a good quality numerical degree with demonstratable equivalent experience
- Experience working in and/or a strong personal preference to work in a development environment supporting productive and efficient work on a safety-critical system
- Expertise in C++
- A provable record of efficiently and productively producing high quality designs, code, and documentation
- Self-motivation to learn, work collaboratively and problem-solve.
- A positive, thorough, patient, trust-worthy, and cooperative personality with a good sense of humour
