**Mō mātou | About us**
**_ “Ko ngā tāngata, te mātua mahi_** - **_Putting people at the heart of all we do”_**
Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, leads the day-to-day running of our health system across New Zealand, with functions delivered at local, district, regional and national levels. It weaves the functions of the 20 former District Health Boards into its regional divisions and district offices, ensuring continuity of services in the health system.
As an organisation we deliver health services to the almost 600,000 people that live in the Canterbury region We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles by ensuring our partnership with Māori are at the forefront of all our conversations.
**Mō te tūnga | About the role**
**The Team**
Canterbury Regional Cancer and Haematology Service (CRCHS) provides radiation services to a regional population of approximately 700,000. CRCHS currently employs ten radiation oncologists, 13 medical oncologists, six haematologists and four palliative care physicians. We are a collaborative unit and work closely with a highly skilled team of radiation therapists, physicists, nurses and specialists from other medical disciplines.
CRCHS has full accreditation for radiation oncology training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists. In addition to eight radiation oncology registrar training posts, we have trainees in medical oncology, haematology and palliative care. We provide medical student teaching for University of Otago, Christchurch school of medicine curriculum. Staff within the radiation oncology department hold positions within the university. We are known throughout New Zealand and beyond for our commitment to delivering the highest standard of teaching and training at all levels, giving confidence that you will be well supported and receive excellent training in brachytherapy.
The department has four linear accelerators, all with six-degree of freedom couches, a wide-bore CT-simulator, Monaco treatment planning system, Mosaiq health information system, Flexitron HDR Brachytherapy and ABC deep inspiratory breath hold units. We led the introduction of stereotactic lung radiation therapy to New Zealand departments, and expanded the stereotactic programme to include CNS metastases and other oligometastatic sites.
The Brachytherapy service is well supported by the urologists and gynaecological oncologists and a specialist nursing and radiation therapist team. Christchurch Public Hospital provides a Brachytherapy service for the whole South Island of New Zealand, with approximately 80-90 courses per year. Low dose rate seed brachytherapy for prostate cancer is performed in the private sector. This seed programme is the busiest in New Zealand. You will be able to participate and train in all aspects of seed brachytherapy in conjunction with the team in private.
We have an established research group, conducting both radiation and systemic trials. We have close links with the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group and have been lead recruiters on a number of TROG trials. We have presented our brachytherapy experience at recent research conferences. Which means, you will have ample opportunities for research.
**Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills & Experience**
You will need to hold the FRANZCR, or an equivalent qualification, that would enable registration as a specialist radiation oncologist by the Medical Council of New Zealand. In addition to your clinical, research, academic and administration duties, you will be participating in the after-hours on-call roster. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team are essential. Additional desirable skills include experience or interest in performing brachytherapy procedures, clinical research and registrar teaching.
