About the role
New Zealand Police are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to be a Data Interception Investigator in the Data Interception Unit (DIU).
The DIU is a small team working within the Crime Monitoring Centre (CMC) in Wellington City. The DIU is a highly-engaged workgroup that provide support to District investigation teams by scrutinising, manipulating and analysing data. You should have good listening, written and verbal communication skills and be able to work well within a busy, established team environment. The position of Data Interception Investigator is a busy and challenging role that involves working rostered shifts.
This is a technical role and you must have an in-depth knowledge of the technologies the internet is built on, understand data transfer technologies and principles, and be able to analyse PCAPs. You will be required to keep on top of emerging technologies and identify potential risks. An ability to program in languages such as Python, Powershell, Java or R to collate and present data to a non-technical audience is essential.
As a Data Interception Investigator, you should be self-motivated, inquisitive, methodical and tenacious. You will have the opportunity to exploit new technologies to drive NZ Police forward in the area of data investigation and contribute directly to targeting and catching offenders.
The team operates 24/7 and you will be working a 3/3 shift roster including weekends and stat days which is 6.45am - 4.45pm & 1.00pm - 11.00pm followed by 4 days off to relax. You will also receive a shift allowance when working on Saturday, Sunday, or weekdays between 6.00pm - 6.00am on top of your base salary along with leave and salary allowances for working on Stat Holidays.
**Key Accountabilities**:
- Collate, evaluate, analyse and process intercepted data and communications
- Able to use the internet as an investigative tool
- Analyse data use, identify trends and present findings in an easily legible format
- Clear, concise written and oral communication skills
- Research and write script to develop tools and techniques in the area of data interception and analysis

- IT qualification in computer science, network engineering, data science or relevant experience preferred
