He angitūtanga | About the role
Reporting to the Deputy Director-General Public Affairs, the Chief Assurance Officer (CAO) is responsible for overseeing the Department's assurance activities, including risk management, internal audit, compliance, audit and investigation. The CAO will lead a talented, small team, ensuring that all processes and policies comply with regulatory requirements and environmental standards.
- Actively lead the risk and assurance function, embedding frameworks, policies and processes aligned with the Department's goals and conservation objectives
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of assurance processes to mitigate risk
- Provide clear advice to the DD-G Public Affairs, Director General and Senior Leadership Team and support interactions with the Risk and Audit Committee
- Collaborate and educate mid/senior leaders to follow and embed good risk management and assurance practises
- Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, and transparency within the Department
- Stay current with industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices to ensure the Department remains compliant and effective in conservation efforts
- Ensure DOC operates as an honourable treaty partner

We are looking for a talented and experienced leader who is passionate about process improvement and will position this function as having a proactive and constructive approach - identifying opportunities for operational improvement and risk mitigation, providing education and supporting the business in its approach to risk and assurance.

**If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you**:

- Relevant experience at a senior/ leadership level in assurance, risk management, internal audit, or compliance. Experience dealing with a large and distributed operational workforce would be advantageous, but not mandatory.
- Relevant qualifications in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Risk Management or related field. Professional certifications such as CA, CPA or CIA partnered with memberships such as IIA NZ, CA ANZ, RMA NZ will be viewed favourably.
- Strategic mindset and the ability to align efforts with broader organisational objectives
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, collaborate and engage stakeholders at all levels, including at executive level
- An inquisitive thinker, you will go the extra mile to empower our workforce and uplift how the business views risk and assurance requirements, ensuring they are on the front foot
- A passionate leader, you motivate your team to understand the context, adapt and be agile when needed, while always looking for continuous improvement opportunities
- Sound understanding of the impact DOC and the wider public sector/government has on the Māori Crown relationship, and the obligations of the Crown under the Treaty of Waitangi

The salary range for this position is $175,200 - $251,850 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory - this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
