The Biochemistry Department is a large research and teaching department housed in a well-equipped building. It is part of the University of Otago and located in Dunedin, a culturally vibrant and diverse university city.

**_ The role/Te mahi_**

A two-year full-time postdoctoral position is available on a China-Maurice Wilkins Centre Collaborative Research Programme funded project with Dr Matthias Fellner in the Department of Biochemistry.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work to establish a pipeline for the development of peptide-based tools for the treatment and diagnosis of infectious diseases. The successful applicant will work at the University of Otago and be a visiting scientist at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) of Chinese Academy of Sciences hosted by Prof Shiyu Chen.

SIMM is a comprehensive pharmaceutical research institution with a high reputation at home and abroad, and is one of the most important innovative drug research bases in China. A total of more than 100 new drugs have been developed and put into production. Prof. Chen's research group belongs to the Biopharmaceutical R&D Center of SIMM, mainly engaged in the development of bicyclic peptide and antibody drugs.

Applicants must have a PhD in a field such as biochemistry, pharmacology, chemical biology or a similar discipline, and experience in techniques such as:

- In vitro enzyme characterisation, including cloning and purification and to a lesser extent structural characterisation.
- Drug screening, discovery and development, including peptides, antibody research, as well as phage display.

The appointment is fixed term, full-time (1.0 FTE), for 24 months. The successful applicant will be expected to take up the position no later than 1 September 2023.

The salary for this position is $82,460 per annum.
