This is a rare opportunity for an exceptional people leader to work at the heart of the administration of justice in the Office of the Chief Justice | Te Tari Toko i te Tumu Whakawā (Te Tari), managing the team of talented young legal researchers working in the High Court.
The Clerks' Manager (High Court) is responsible for providing tailored management support for the cohort of young law graduates during their two-year placement with the High Court across three locations.
Clerks work in a complex and dynamic environment under the direction of the judiciary. As well as providing support and pastoral care, the Clerks' Manager will be responsible for ensuring the systems and policies are in place to assist judges and clerks navigate the triangular reporting relationship. They will be responsible for building high trust and effective relationships with the judiciary, registries, and the wider management team, to ensure judges have access to a consistently high and seamless level of support.
We are seeking a people leader with outstanding relationship and leadership skills and a strong desire to make a difference by bringing about improvements to the way we attract, engage and develop our clerks. The Clerks' Manager will also be expected to continue to look for ways to improve our wider systems and processes to support the clerks in their work with the Senior Courts.
Reporting to the Manager, Judicial Services, Associates & Clerks. The Clerks' Manager (High Court) will be based in Auckland and oversee the High Court clerks based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The role will work closely and provide support and back up cover for the Clerks' Manager (Appellate Courts) when required.

Ō pūkenga/Skills and Experience
- Proven people management experience, particularly with staff early in career or in high pressure roles.
- A management style underpinned by the ability to achieve outcomes through influence, collaboration and partnering with others.
- Proven experience with managing a range of sensitive issues, performance and development, intergenerational communication, onboarding/induction and career planning.
- An in depth understanding of the workings of the court.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to influence diverse and at times competing views to bring about culture change
- Able to build and maintain positive relationships and effective networks across and within organisations
- High degree of computer literacy, including intermediate knowledge of the MS Office suite.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret complex documents, including legislation, financial, numerical and business information.

Mō mātou/About us
The Office of the Chief Justice | Te Tari Toko i te Tumu Whakawā (Te Tari), supports the independent judicial arm of government. It supports the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, and Chief Judge of the High Court, in their leadership and administrative responsibilities.
The Judicial Services Team is responsible for managing and supporting approximately 60 clerks and 70 associates who provide administrative and legal research support for 71 judges within the Senior Courts across five court locations nationwide.
**These staff work under the direction of the judiciary**: the support they provide enables judges to perform their duties efficiently and effectively.
Judges support needs differ between individuals and between courts. They are also evolving in response to changes in the courts operating environment including changes in technology. The small judicial services team is responsible for anticipating and responding to those changes, and for working collaboratively with the judiciary to ensure we continue to recruit, develop and retain a high calibre workforce capable of providing a consistent level of service and adapting to the rapidly evolving courts environment.

Utu ā-tau/Salary
The appointing salary for this role will be between $97,208 and $125,683 based on skills and experience.
