Wellington City, New Zealand Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa Full time

**Researcher in Marine Tetrapods - Three Year Fixed Term**

Te Papa is looking for a Fixed Term Researcher in Marine Tetrapods to join the Museum's Natural History team for three years as part of the Te Papa-led Marsden Fund Programme: “Fish, squid and krill: deep-time evolution of marine tetrapod feeding ecology”

The Te Papa Natural History team develop, care for and research collections of plants and animals, documenting the biodiversity of Aotearoa New Zealand, understanding its evolutionary history, and providing the foundations for its protection. Through research, exhibitions, publications, public programmes and learning programmes, we strengthen public understanding of te taiao, the natural environment

As part of an international research team, the Researcher (Marine Tetrapods) will explore trophic interactions via Ca isotopes from the bones of living and extinct marine tetrapods (whales, dolphins, seals and penguins). The research programme will analyse isotope data derived from museum specimens to investigate the variability of Ca isotope values across modern marine tetrapod skeletons; create a reference dataset calibrating Ca against known feeding ecologies of living species and better-established chemical proxies; and infer the feeding ecology of extinct whales, dolphins, seals and penguins. As part of the project, the Researcher will spend prolonged periods (3 months or more) at a collaborating institution in Lyon, France.

**Knowledge, experience and qualifications**
- Essential_
