We are looking for someone with a good understanding of strategic crisis management to support the delivery of exercises and other readiness activities for the New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa, to ensure the organisation is prepared for national emergencies. New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa protects New Zealand's border using world-class tools, world-class people and innovative approaches.
The Intelligence, Investigations and Enforcement (II&E) Group's mission is to protect the integrity of New Zealand's border system. Within II&E sits the National Security & Emergency Management (NS&EM) team whose primary aim is to support and represent Customs within the National Security and ODESC Systems.
**Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role**
This role is at the rank of Senior Customs Officer (Grade 2) within the National Security & Emergency Management team. The role will hold responsibilities under the following areas:
- Supporting the delivery of the Customs Exercise Programme, and Customs' participation in the National Exercise Programme
- Cultivating relationships at all levels across the public and private sectors
- Representing Customs at a range of external forums
- Contributing to other NS&EM portfolios where required
- Workplan delivery
- Internal reporting
By focusing on translating strategic requirements into operational planning, identifying and acting on opportunities, and working across the business and external stakeholders, you will play an integral part in ensuring that Customs actively contributes to, and benefits from, the planning and preparation for national emergencies across the National Security and ODESC Systems; and ensuring Customs is prepared for such emergencies through supporting the delivery of the Customs Exercise Programme.
You will be part of a team that:
- coordinates the Customs strategic-level response to major incidents and emergencies of national security significance ensuring Customs' actions are fully coordinated, both across the organisation and with the All-of-Government response
- ensures Customs has a highly effective readiness capability to respond to major incidents and emergencies
- coordinates Customs participation in All-of-Government efforts to enhance New Zealand's national security (including major event planning, readiness/preparedness exercises, providing advice on Security and Intelligence Board related matters)
- works closely with other Customs work areas to ensure best practice across business continuity, emergency management, and lessons learned management.

This role requires someone who is outcomes-driven and will be agile in balancing proactive and responsive activities. You will be someone who follows through on commitments, communicating early where obstacles are and how to overcome them.
You must be able to influence others to effectively deliver on tasks. You will need a proven track record of building and sustaining a range of strong relationships and providing high quality service delivery.
Your ability to communicate effectively using a high standard of written and oral communication skills appropriate to a variety of audiences will be highly valued. In addition, you will have strong problem solving capability, including the ability to identify problems, manage or mitigate risks and implement solution based outcomes, including in high pressure situations.
Experience in organisational readiness or strategic crisis management is essential. Knowledge of the National Security and ODESC Systems will be strongly beneficial.

The salary range for this role is $75,971 - $96,013, with $87,400 representing midpoint or proficiency in the role. This will be pro-rata if a part-time arrangement is confirmed.
