This is a full time, permanent position for a psychiatrist practising adult general psychiatry and specialised in intensive care of acutely disturbed psychiatric patients. The role is based in a district general hospital, which provides secondary care, 24/7 emergency department and is an RANZCP accredited training hospital.
The Intensive Mental Health Service is a 23-bed unit catering to patients with high and medium intensity mental health needs requiring admission to an inpatient facility. This service works in conjunction with two large community teams, with a Kaupapa Māori Mental Health Service provided by an NGO partner and satellite teams in the smaller population centres. Within the service are Te Harakeke Child, Adolescent and Family Service, Home Based Treatment, Maternal Mental Health, Te Ara Manapou Parenting and Pregnancy, Consult-Liaison, Emergency Mental Health Service, Older Persons Mental Health and Addiction services.
**Responsibilities of this role**
- To provide specialist psychiatric assessment and treatment to people with severe mental illness.
- To ensure and prioritise a focus on patient safety and quality relating to care and processes within the Mental Health Service.
- To operationally and strategically support the ongoing development of the Mental Health Service and wider Mental Health and Addictions Directorate.
- To be actively involved with project management and will be involved in selected service improvement activities as delegated by the respective clinical and management leaders.
- To contribute to delivery of organisational KPIs including relevant MoH targets, financial budgets and service plans
- To liaise with other medical services where necessary for example, Physicians, GPs, NGOs; etc.
- To act as Responsible Clinician for clients under the Mental Health Act and carry out all duties and obligations of the role of Responsible Clinician within the meaning of the term in the Mental Health Act 1992.
- To participate in the on-call after hours SMO roster
**Role Requirements**
- A basic medical qualification recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand
- FANZCP or equivalent post graduate qualification in psychiatry and experience eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of NZ
- Hold or be eligible for Vocational Registration with Medical Council of NZ in the scope of psychiatry
- Experience working in acute psychiatric intensive care
- ECT experience
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure
**Remuneration and Benefits**

- A full time and permanent employment contract with a salary paid in accordance with the national framework for Senior Medical Officers ie NZD $ 190000-270000 pa
