Explore emerging energy technology impacts on the New Zealand power system
- Collaborate with industry participants and stakeholders re: system security
- Be part of shaping the electricity industry of the future
- Contribute to the energy transition programme by modelling potential impacts and scenarios on the power system as part of the System Operator_
Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.
**About the team**
The System Operator Power Systems group is responsible for providing a service of multifaceted power system modelling and analysis, engineering, and risk and assurance management to enable Transpower as System Operator to meet its principal performance obligations under the Electricity Industry Participants Code (The Code) and successfully operate the New Zealand electricity market and power system today and into the future. All teams within the group play key roles in delivering this service.
Our Power System Development team specialises in strategic technical research and advice. The team partners with the Electricity Authority to prepare the System Operator and industry participants to meet the challenges of decarbonisation, whilst ensuring future security and resilience.
The team undertakes strategic research and analysis of emerging energy technologies to provide expert advice to enable the Code, standards, and guidelines to evolve to allow their seamless integration into the power system. In addition, the team provides essential power system analysis and expert dynamic modelling and tool support to other teams within the Power System group.

**A career defining opportunity**
Working closely with other power system professionals across Transpower, you'll explore and communicate the challenges and opportunities that the transition to a 100% renewable electricity system will bring.
Using your outstanding analytical and communication skills, you'll help us engage with the Electricity Authority, and industry participants to make the required changes to the market, standards, and the Code to enable a secure and resilient power system for New Zealand for generations to come.
**What will you bring?**
Three or more years of experience in analysing operational challenges of integrating renewable generation. You will have honed your ability to understand, analyse, and solve complex power system problems through working for a Transmission System Operator, Grid Owner, Engineering Consultancy, Research Institution, Government, or professional institution.
Your communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to problem solve and influence will be put to the test as you consider the implications of an evolving New Zealand power system to power system operations, system security, and stability. You'll consider the challenges for the System Operator due to high penetration levels of renewable or inverter generation technologies, including energy storage systems like batteries, pumped hydro, and hydrogen.
- A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, power electronics, or related field. Knowledge, and at least 3+ years' experience in, modelling and analysing inverter generation technologies. Where applicable please highlight any research/reports/conference papers you have been involved with
- Knowledge and at least 3+ years' experience with Power System Analysis Tools to support building dynamic power system models and performing load flow and time domain simulations; ideally Siemens PSS®E or DIgSILENT PowerFactory

**To be a "Senior" Engineer in the Transpower context - you will also demonstrate**:
- 7+ years knowledge and experience in power system operations or transmission planning
- The ability to lead power system studies and/or projects and prepare/validate powerflow cases and dynamic models in PowerFactory for conducting power system analysis and simulations
