New Zealand Wellington City Council Full time

**Commissioning Manager - Sludge Minimization Plant**

At the centre of New Zealand, you'll find the coolest capital city the world has seen. Nestled between green hills teeming with nature and a harbour at your front door, you will step out to a vibrant and progressive city just waiting for you to explore.

Wellington City Council has established a vision for Pōneke (Wellington) as an inclusive, sustainable, and creative capital for people to live, work and play. The future of Wellington is compact, inclusive & connected, greener, resilient, vibrant, and prosperous.

We understand that waste is now a mainstream environmental and sustainability challenge not just for us here in Pōneke, but for all New Zealanders. It affects all of us on a micro level, at home and at work, and at the City Council level it is one of the major drivers of our carbon profile.

Here at WCC we are ambitious, and we make no excuses for it We know we need to act now to safeguard our beautiful city for future generations. So, we set out a zero-waste target for Wellington, which signals a significant shift in how we as a city think about waste, the services and infrastructure we provide, and how businesses, residents and the Council can contribute to making a difference for our city's environmental, societal, and economic future.

But it's not just all about waste with us, we also put into play Te Atakura - First to Zero which is our blueprint to make Wellington City a zero-carbon capital (net zero emissions) by 2050.

To achieve this, Wellington City Council is undertaking one of the most complex infrastructure projects we will deliver over the next few years and one that's a critical component of a much wider Waste Minimisation Plan.

We understand that in order to make headway on our capital's emissions reduction, we need to invest in alternate sewage sludge disposal technologies providing resilience and care for our environment. This is the direction we must follow now, and for future generations.

The first facility of its type in New Zealand, our Sludge Minimisation Facility at Moa Point, adjacent to the existing wastewater treatment plant will reduce the volume of sludge by up to 80 percent. This is expected to cut carbon emissions from sewage treatment by up to 60 percent and represents a big step toward meeting our goal of being net zero carbon.

The large scale and complexity of this project will also enable opportunities to grow new skills and experience in the local workforce and provide a showcase into engineering and construction for the wider community and beyond.
