An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join the Legislation Team within the Legal, Ethics and Privacy branch.
Permanent position based in our central Wellington offices.
Salary range $118,390 – $160,472 plus kiwisaver.
About the Role
Our Legislation team provides legal advice on the development and amendment of primary and secondary legislation across MBIE's 17 regulatory systems, creating opportunities for lawyers to work across different regulatory systems.
In this role you will work with in‑house lawyers, policy analysts and the Parliamentary Counsel Office to support MBIE, Ministers and Select Committees in delivering the Government's legislation programme.
Strong public law skills are essential.
The role involves advising on development and implementation of legislation within MBIE's diverse regulatory systems and may also include regulatory and operational matters.
As a Senior Solicitor you will work autonomously within a collaborative team, providing support to colleagues of all experience levels and advising on complex and high‑profile legislative matters.
Responsibilities
Advise on the development and amendment of primary and secondary legislation.
Provide legal support to colleagues developing legislation, including policy development and instruction.
Participate in Cabinet and Parliamentary processes relevant to legislation.
Consult on regulatory and operational legal matters as needed.
Support MBIE, Ministers and Select Committees in the government legislation programme.
Qualifications
At least five years PQE and experience supporting primary and secondary legislation, including working with the Parliamentary Counsel Office.
Strong public law expertise, including administrative law, statutory interpretation and machinery of government.
Experience or interest in regulatory and operational legal matters.
Sound technical legal skills and client‑service attitude.
Excellent relationship management, written and verbal communication skills.
Legal right to live and work in NZ.
Tertiary qualification in law and current practising certificate (or eligible).
