Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role
We are looking to recruit for two positions within our Legal team:

- A Solicitor or Senior Solicitor to join our Food Safety & Fisheries Law Team.
These positions are permanent and preferably full time and will start in the above teams. There may be additional fixed term opportunities within the Legal team.

This may include ensuring the effective translation of strategy and policy into legislation, the interpretation of legislation to deliver robust legal opinions and advice, and/or the drafting and management of commercial contracting arrangements. They are expected to work across MPI with a varied focus, develop technical excellence in a variety of areas of primary industries law, and confidently assess and manage legal risk.
Mō tō mātou rōpū - About the Team
The Biosecurity & Animal Welfare Law Team supports MPI staff working in Biosecurity NZ and Animal Health & Welfare; and the Food Safety & Fisheries Law Team supports MPI staff working in NZ Food Safety and Fisheries NZ. Both teams provide general public law and operational advice, assist with the development and drafting of legislation, and support and instruct external counsel on civil and public law litigation.
These teams sit within the Legal Services directorate. Legal Services covers a wide range of interesting work including commercial arrangements, public law operational advice, involvement in emergency responses for food, trade, and biosecurity, prosecutions, civil and public law litigation support, legal and organisational risk management, and training. While Solicitors/Senior Solicitors are appointed to a particular team, we work very collaboratively, and have a rotation policy to provide the opportunity to move between teams.
Mōu - About You
In order to be considered for either of these roles, you will need:
