We require an innovative and solutions-focused thinker with experience in developing strategy and policy, working across and influencing government agencies to achieve work programme outcomes, and with deep knowledge of the machinery of government   Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People has a unique mandate of having responsibility to steward change across Government, while commissioning disability support services, as well as transforming how these services are delivered.

As the Principal Advisor you will report directly to the Group Manager, Partnerships and Stewardship and work closely with the Manager New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), to deliver results for Deaf and disabled people, including influencing other government agencies’ programmes of work and service delivery.
You will lead and support others to develop strategic work, such as the New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Strategy and will lead the development of action-focused work programme to support this strategy.
You will support the development of policy advice in relation to NZSL and Deaf people, such as options to develop the quality and quantity of the NZSL workforce.
You will also draw linkages across and participate as necessary in other key priority work of the Group, such the development of the next New Zealand Disability Strategy.
You will play a lead role in maintaining and developing the quality of advice given to the Minister for Disability Issues.
You will support the Group Manager and team managers in the group to plan and deliver the Group’s work programme and share your skills and experience in a way that adds value to the Group as a whole.
The role will also provide for some work with the Whaikaha Policy team.
Ko wai koe | About You:  You will have a successful background providing technical leadership and senior expertise across government and will have an interest in Deaf and disability policy and Deaf and disability strategy work.  Your strong relationship management skills will ensure you are comfortable working collaboratively with government agencies and stakeholders and engaging with others.  You will have deep knowledge of the policy process and government financial management practices.
This will be paired with knowledge of New Zealand government structures and process such as, committee structures and decision-making processes.
Your proven experience and knowledge of identifying linkages and opportunities across government programmes and initiatives, will be vital to leverage opportunities to deliver results for Deaf and disabled people.
