Mō te tūnga | About the role

The purpose of this role is to assess and respond to claims related to children and young people who have experienced abuse whilst in the care of Oranga Tamariki. A key responsibility is to ensure the support is child centric. This involves promoting the wellbeing of children and reflecting their views in all claims activities. The role requires a considered and calm approach during conversations about difficult experiences. It includes providing expert knowledge and guidance to inform assessments and requires strong advocacy on behalf of individuals in promoting their needs to enable the delivery of a suite of responses.

This role is central to ensuring a kind and caring response which supports a journey of healing in addressing the impacts of abuse. The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail, have developed and embedded processes (ideally in a large organisation), and be able to collaborate with internal business groups and external stakeholders. Your aptitude to challenge the status quo along with your ability to remain calm under pressure will be the key to your success

Key requirements of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Excellent communicator, with the ability to translate complex information and ideas into a language that can be understood by a wide range of people and produce high-quality written work
  • A passion and commitment for engaging with and advocating for children and young people
  • Ability to engage with children and young people as well as their family/whānau and wider family networks
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural issues and concerns, particularly knowledge of tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples' culture
  • Strong relationship management skills

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children has a commitment to putting tamariki and rangatahi at the heart of what we do. In our work, we aim to demonstrate these values:

  • We put Tamariki first
  • We respect the Mana of people
  • We value Whakapapa
  • We recognise that Oranga is a journey

We are committed to ensuring that New Zealand is the best place in the world to be a child. We are also committed to ensuring Oranga Tamariki partners with hapū, iwi, and Māori organisations to find appropriate solutions for tamariki in need.

Nōu te rourou | What's in it for you

We offer a vibrant and supportive team, flexible work options, and a genuine commitment to wellbeing. We provide significant training and professional development so that you can thrive and grow. We welcome diversity and are committed to working in an inclusive and respectful way. This is your opportunity to apply your skills and experience to the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi.

Apply online with your CV and Covering Letter. If you are an Oranga Tamariki employee already, please ensure you apply with a log in using your Oranga Tamariki email address.
