The Ministry of Defence has a great opportunity for a permanent Data Analyst in the Development Branch of the Policy and Planning Division. This could be an entry level role. You will fulfil an important role providing data driven advice on the Defence portfolio to inform large budget expenditure decisions. You will have involvement in providing analytical insights, developing business processes around data, along with optimising data quality.

The Development Branch leads the provision of advice to the Minister and Cabinet on military capability while also providing policy analysis for capability requirements and problem definition.

We are keen to hear about your experience so have noted some requirements below:

  • A degree or postgraduate degree that demonstrates the application of data analysis (such as operations research and statistics or economics) or relevant experience
  • The ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Well-developed analytical, strategic and conceptual thinking skills
  • Great self-organisation skills and a flexible approach
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Excel skills
  • An inventive and resourceful approach - enjoying developing things from scratch

It is advantageous but not essential to have:

  • Experience with qualitative research and analysis
  • An understanding of financial principles and/or economic analysis
  • Experience in using statistical or data management tools

We are the Government's lead civilian advisor on defence. We also purchase major equipment which becomes a capability when it is used by those in service of the New Zealand Defence Force.

Salary and Benefits

The anticipated starting salary range for this role is $66,402 + 3% KiwiSaver. Appointment will be based on skills and experience.

Please note:

Successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a high level security clearance. For this role it means candidates must have been a New Zealand citizen for at least 10 years.

Alternatively, you must hold a NZ Resident Visa or a NZ Permanent Resident Visa, and have been a citizen of the UK, Canada, USA or Australia, for at least the past 10 years.
