Te Whiwhinga mahi| The opportunity

As the Senior Media Specialist, you will be the go-to person for media and communications advice, providing strategic communications and issues management advice, training and support for our senior leaders and experts.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing Auckland Transport's day-to-day engagement with the media
  • Building great relationships with journalists and stakeholders
  • Providing best practice media and communications advice to business units and communications colleagues across Auckland Transport and our partner agencies
  • Supporting Auckland Transport's crisis and emergency management communications, including acting as a public information manager when needed
  • Running media training sessions for our senior leaders and regular spokespeople
  • Positioning Auckland Transport as an organisation that puts its customers first as it works to transform Auckland's transport system
  • Developing and implementing communications strategies and plans
  • Identifying and delivering on proactive storytelling opportunities
Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

You will be a trusted advisor who provides best practice media and communication advice and support to teams across Auckland Transport, while building and maintaining excellent relationships with media organisations and key stakeholders.

You will confidently ask questions of AT's senior leaders, operational units and project teams to help you identify reputational risks and opportunities, challenge assumptions using evidence and data, and serve as a strong advocate for Auckland Transport's customers.

You will have excellent interpersonal and relationship skills, coupled with political awareness and an excellent risk radar. You will develop and implement communications strategies, utilising your strong oral and written communication skills.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification in Communications or Journalism is desired but not essential
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in relevant communications advisory role or 5 years' experience as a reporter in a media organisation
