Senior Advisor Data and Insights at Electoral Commission, Wellington

The Electoral Commission is looking for an experienced candidate to join our Strategy, Governance and Development group as a Senior Advisor Data and Insights.

This role will report directly to the Manager Data and Insights with the primary responsibility being to provide high-quality data advice, analysis, and information to support decision-making. This role involves data analysis, insights development and advice preparation for business units; supporting the conversion of data into insights by means of business intelligence and analytics tools; and championing best practice data stewardship throughout the Commission.

This is an 18-month fixed term role; this is a band 18 role and the salary band is $124,061 - $137,845. The preferred base for the position is the Electoral Commission's main office in Wellington, though working from other Commission offices or remotely in New Zealand will be considered.

  • Querying and analysing data and creating meaningful insights to assist the Commission in making sound evidence-based decisions
  • Developing dashboards and other business intelligence solutions to help the Commission demonstrate its performance
  • Developing and maintaining analytical solutions
  • Supporting analysis, simulations, and tests of proposed solutions to ensure optimal implementation
  • Responding to public and media enquiries that require customised or specialised data or reports

Ko ngā mea ka hiahiatia e koe kia angitū | What you'll need to succeed

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or at least 3-5 years' experience in analytics and insights
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with experience conveying complex, technical information to non-technical persons
  • Well-developed analytical skills with a keen eye for detail and the desire to probe deeper into data with the ability to formulate well-reasoned solutions
  • Strong understanding of statistical techniques and concepts
  • Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple deliverables, and deliver to deadlines
  • Experience developing, testing and maintaining dashboards and data visualisations in a business intelligence tool (Tableau preferable)
  • Proficient in querying data with SQL and working with relational databases
  • Experience implementing best practices of data governance to maintain high data quality and integrity
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure and Snowflake preferable)
  • Capability in developing predictive models and using machine learning
  • Experience with ETL tools (such as DBT) and developing data pipelines
  • Experience in managing projects and gathering requirements from business users
