About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Nurse Educator to join our team at the Professional Development Unit (PDU).
Reporting to the PDU Nurse Manager, you will play a key role in delivering continuing nursing education and professional development activities, ensuring nursing staff have the knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective patient care.
You will work closely with clinical teams, managers, and external partners to maintain high educational standards.
Responsibilities include:
- Facilitate nursing training and education activities according to prescribed standards and adult learning principles.
- Assist in the orientation and preceptorship of new/resuming nursing staff, ensuring adherence to competency-based approaches and best practices.
- Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of educative initiatives to ensure compliance with relevant policies and legislative requirements.
- Demonstrate commitment to personal and professional development, attending relevant education programs and staying updated on nursing trends.
- Promote the PDU in a positive and accurate manner to the public, consumers, and other staff members.
- Observe all Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora safe work procedures and instructions.
This position is 24 hours per week (0.6 FTE) Monday to Friday and will have a primary focus on resuscitation and deteriorating patient education.
About the Service
The Professional Development Unit provides a range of educational opportunities aimed towards the Nursing, Midwifery, and Hospital Aide workforce at Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, Canterbury Waitaha.
About you
Our ideal applicant will be a technologically savvy person who has confidence on the computer, ideally with an advanced knowledge of Word, Excel, and Teams. We are looking for an all-round team player who can work autonomously and is able to take initiative. In this role, you will be required to manage multiple priorities and distractions.
You will have the following skills and experience:
- Have recent broad-based experience in acute care nursing within a tertiary healthcare environment.
- Use findings from nursing research as the basis for practice.
- Have demonstrated clinical teaching abilities. Ideally holds a Certificate of Adult Teaching or graduate qualification in Adult Education (or equivalent) or is working towards this.
- Have evidence of continuing nursing education and professional development commensurate with the role.
- Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate across all occupational groups in health.
- Able to work under pressure to fulfill urgent requests within tight time-frames.
- Working knowledge of computer systems, good word-processing and keyboard skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and effectively within a small team.
- Self-motivated and an ability to contribute to and accommodate change.
- A relevant postgraduate qualification in nursing or working towards one.
- Demonstrate a commitment to developing an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi, Māori, and other cultural issues as related to the PDU.
- Demonstrate a professional attitude including self and team care.
- Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
