We are looking for a Mechanical Project Engineer with great energy and drive to join our high-performing team in Dunedin.

About the Role

The Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for ensuring the effective coordination and control of engineering works through the activities of technical, engineering, inspection, scheduling, planning, survey, procurement and quality control.

In addition to the conventional Mechanical Project Engineer objectives, this role will have a secondary function in delivering the following Business development objectives:

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, research, and execution of mechanical engineering projects in Dunedin and surrounding regions, ensuring alignment with McConnell Dowell's strategic goals.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and suppliers to support mechanical project delivery.
  • Identify and assess business opportunities, ensuring they align with McConnell Dowell mechanical engineering capabilities and project objectives.
  • Provide technical expertise on mechanical construction methodologies, including constructability assessments and project planning.
  • Work closely with Engineering Managers, Superintendents, and Construction Teams to coordinate mechanical engineering design, temporary works, and scheduling.
  • Oversee fabrication, installation, and commissioning of mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Monitor and manage construction schedules, resource planning (manning charts), equipment logistics, and progress tracking.
  • Proactively identify risks and recommend solutions to ensure project efficiency and successful delivery.
About You
  • Tertiary qualification in mechanical engineering (or related discipline).
  • Minimum Seven years of experience in project engineering, with a strong track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
  • Experience in project engineering with knowledge of project management principles.
  • Strong skills in work scheduling, planning, and logistics, particularly in mechanical construction.
  • In-depth understanding of Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) standards and practical experience in their implementation.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Based in Dunedin, with the ability to support both local and regional projects.
