Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Environment Canterbury Full time

Job Category: Administration and Office, Advertising, Media, Arts & Entertainment, Environmental Services

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support managers with effective communications & engagement advice.
  • Enjoy a mixture of reactive and planned responsibilities.
  • Be part of a friendly and supportive team.

Waitaha - our Canterbury region - is like no other and we are proud to call it home. We are privileged to be working with Ngā Papatipu Rūnanga, stakeholders, and our wider community to protect our environment, including water, land, and air through regulation and planning. As a Regional Council, we're responsible for flood protection, public transport, civil defence, and more.

Together we're taking action to shape a thriving and resilient Canterbury, now and for future generations. Toitū te marae o Tāne, toitū te marae o Tangaroa, toitū te tangata. If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.

You'll be joining a friendly team where no two days are the same. One day you may be out in a rural environment capturing a story about local environmental work, the next responding to an urgent unfolding environmental incident.

The role is permanent, full-time (40 hours per week).

You'll be involved in:

  • Supporting the team responding to environmental incidents.
  • Helping to deliver engagement campaigns to talk to the community about issues affecting their properties or community.
  • Writing articles and creating digital content that showcases the projects and issues our teams are working on.

You'll ideally have a relevant tertiary qualification in a communications discipline along with practical knowledge in developing communication and engagement strategies in partnership with internal and external stakeholders. You'll be an enthusiastic, energetic, skilled advisor working closely with managers across the organisation.

To enjoy this role, you'll:

  • Be strong in your writing, marketing, communications, or engagement.
  • Interpret and translate complex or technical information into everyday language.
  • Be community-focused, with the ability to see things from the community's perspective.
  • Have an understanding of te ao Māori and te reo Māori and experience in iwi engagement, or a willingness to learn.

Our values underpin everything we do. We understand and embrace a diverse workforce; this diversity will enable us to better serve our people, our community, and our greatest taonga, the environment. We value everyone's contribution, diverse thinking, and skills.

We're on a journey to become a Treaty partner of excellence, including incorporating te ao Māori into our work. We offer supportive opportunities to develop capability in this area and encourage our people to use kaupapa Māori, mātauranga Māori, and te reo Māori in our daily work. We welcome you with an open heart & mind, wherever you are on your personal te ao Māori journey.

For a confidential chat about this role, please contact Jo Taylor-de Vocht at jo.taylor-devocht@ecan.govt.nz.

Applications close on Sunday 16 March 2025. We encourage you to apply early; we will be reviewing applications and interviewing candidates as we receive them. We reserve the right to close the advertising early.

Short-listed candidates will be required to complete an interview process, reference checks, and a criminal check. Further background checking will be undertaken as appropriate for the role.
