Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time
Policy Analyst, Sector Strategy at Ministry for Primary Industries, Wellington City

Job Title: Policy Analyst – Sector Strategy

Role type: Full time, permanent

Location: Wellington or Rotorua

Salary band & range: GSR F $74,964 – $87,466

The Sector Strategy teams play a key role in shaping the future of New Zealand's forestry and wood processing sector to support New Zealand's economic development and climate response. The Sector Strategy team takes a whole-system approach, looking at the entire supply chain—from seedlings to sawmills and markets—to identify opportunities that drive sustainable growth and innovation.

As a Policy Analyst, you will contribute to policy development, strategic initiatives, sector investment, and industry engagement. You'll work on projects that examine investment opportunities, climate change, land use, international trade, and emerging biotechnologies, informing decision-making at both a government and sector level.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that directly influences policy, trade, and economic development in one of New Zealand's most cornerstone industries.

We are looking for a motivated Policy Analyst with:

  • Some experience in a government policy, regulatory, or strategy role preferred (or relevant transferable skills).
  • A broad understanding of economics, geopolitics, climate policy, or international trade.
  • The ability to think critically, analyze complex information, and turn insights into actionable policy and investment advice.
  • Excellent written communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A collaborative and adaptable approach—you will be comfortable (with support) working across different teams, including government agencies, Treaty partners, and forestry and wood processing stakeholders.

You do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.

The Forestry System directorate at Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service provides operational policy and economic development advice to support the government's forestry objectives and is a critical bridge to supporting MPI's Policy & Trade business units with specialist forestry and wood processing knowledge. We work closely with other directorates and agencies to ensure our policy advice is robust, evidence-based, and effective for the sector. Our work is diverse, ranging from the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and Tairāwhiti land use initiatives to the Maximising Forest Carbon Programme.

With teams in Wellington, Rotorua, and Gisborne, we foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

  • Additional MPI leave days
  • Option to purchase extra annual leave
  • Annual wellness payment

We are committed to being a good partner under Te Tiriti o Waitangi which includes working closely with iwi, hapū, whānau, and hāpori. We aspire to reflect the diverse communities we serve, so we welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and identities. As an organisation, we are committed to making Manatū Ahu Matua Ministry for Primary Industries a great place to work for all. In your cover letter we'd like to know about you, your values; your interest and motivations for this role; the abilities, strengths, personal attributes, and diverse perspectives you will bring to the role and this organisation, which may have also been gained outside of the workforce.

To view the position description and/or apply online, please click "APPLY FOR THIS JOB" or visit the MPI Careers Site. To apply, you must hold the right to work in New Zealand or be eligible to obtain it – click here to find out more about work visa eligibility and options.

Applications close at midnight on Tuesday 29th April 2025
