With a healthy pipeline of future work, it is now an exciting time to join the McConnell Dowell Whanau at our Otaki to North Levin Project.

We now have an opportunity for a HSE Advisor to join the team, leading the continuous development of health, safety and environmental initiatives and practices that drive our culture of zero harm at McConnell Dowell.

The ideal candidate should be based in Wellington and then willing to travel or relocate to the Otaki or Levin area once the site office becomes operational in September.

About The Role

  • The Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation and coordination of Health Safety & Environmental activities and management plans on all of McConnell Dowell's Projects.
  • Provide advice and assistance to management and operations for the development, implementation, review, and revision of Health Safety Environmental systems and job specific documentation.
  • Report, investigate and implement corrective and/or preventive actions resulting from identification of hazards, near miss incidents and work-related illness/injury.
  • Ensuring that Health Safety and Environmental Responsibilities are understood across the project and monitoring that these responsibilities are addressed and met.
  • Report on health safety and environmental matters to management including preparation of accident and loss statistics and monthly summary reports.
  • Work to achieve safety targets and to build a strong safety culture.
  • Monitor and plan training requirements for all employees in relation to upcoming project risks.
What you will need
  • 3-5 years of operational experience in the application of safety management principles in the construction industry.
  • Team player who can work alongside all work crews and communicate clearly all advice and requirements.
  • Extensive experience applying Health and Safety and risk management principles in construction, ensuring compliance, mitigating risks, and promoting a safety culture.
  • Able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and be resourceful and self-reliant in investigating and inquiring into issues.
  • Able to organise, plan and prioritise between operational and strategic issues with a proven record of delivering outcomes.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, preferably with stand-up training experience.
  • Competent user of in-house software, with working knowledge of wider applications.
  • Experience in investigating and reporting safety incidents.
  • Working knowledge of risk assessment and audit procedures.
Ability To Demonstrate/knowledge Of The Following Is Preferred
  • NZQA Level 3 Workplace Health and Safety Practice (or working towards)
  • Experience in Occupational Health and Safety Administration
  • Knowledge of ACC Accredited Employer Programme and AS/NZS Standards
  • Experience working in a Construction or Infrastructure Environment
  • Understanding of privacy law and its application.
