We are on the lookout for an exceptional, commercially focused senior lawyer to join and support the growth of our organization. This role encompasses a diverse range of legal matters across multiple business areas where you will be the go-to expert

You will enjoy a high degree of autonomy, reporting directly to the CEO of NZ, and have the opportunity to mentor and manage others. As a true partner to the business, you will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to drive strategic initiatives and support business goals. Your ability to provide robust legal counsel on a wide array of issues will be crucial in ensuring compliance and mitigating risk in the regulatory environment.

Innovation and proactivity are key in this role, as you will be expected to find new ways to support legal and business processes, addressing challenges and opportunities proactively. Working alongside global peers, you will share insights and develop cohesive strategies. You should have a varied background but with strong experience as a Senior In-House Lawyer, encompassing general skills and experience. Conducting thorough risk assessments and detailed analysis will be essential to inform decision-making.

Your passion for partnering with the organisation and collaborating with different departments will be vital. This role requires high integrity, curiosity, commercial acumen, strong judgement, and the ability to operate effectively in a complex and fast-paced environment. The FNZ Legal function delivers timely and proportionate legal advice, empowering the business to make informed decisions with a comprehensive understanding of any legal risks.

The successful person will be based in Wellington or Auckland.

The responsibilities will include:

  • Negotiating and drafting client and supplier contracts, managing and maintaining FNZ's contracts register, and overseeing contract analysis and reporting.
  • Providing general legal support to the business, including advice on corporate and commercial matters and managing disputes.
  • Managing and monitoring relationships with external legal advisors and key stakeholders.
  • Supporting strategic projects, M&A activity, and the Compliance and Risk function with clear advice on key financial markets law and regulation.
  • Reviewing company activities related to APAC legal matters, identifying and mitigating potential litigation issues, and contributing to the development and maintenance of the annual APAC legal budget.
  • Supporting Group legal policy, liaising with group colleagues, and advising on proposed legal and regulatory changes.
  • Supporting the Privacy Officer, including conducting privacy impact assessments and supporting new projects.
  • Providing support to the CEO NZ and guiding junior team members.
  • Focusing on legal risk management and the production and upkeep of policy and process documents.
  • Carrying out additional tasks as required from time to time.

What are we ideally looking for in a successful candidate?

  • Strong, demonstratable experience as a Senior Lawyer in an inhouse legal role.
  • You will ideally have legal experience within the fintech/financial services sector, however we will also look at people with strong generalist inhouse legal experience.
  • Firm understanding of regulatory, legislative, and industry compliance obligations in funds or investment management, or trading firms would be advantageous.
  • Strong commercial and/or contracts experience with skills in analysis, negotiation, and drafting.
  • Ideally you will have working knowledge of the Financial Markets Conduct Act, AML/CFT Act, and Privacy Act
  • Some experience with commercial negotiation and/or M&A.
  • Experience with corporate policies, including writing and monitoring compliance.
  • Experience in drafting regulatory submissions.
