Description

At Trade Me, we're about connecting Kiwi to create the life they want. Whether it's the big things like finding a home, a job, a car, or growing their business, or the smaller things, like finding that right bedside table or parting ways with some old stuff. At Trade Me our vision is to be the place where Kiwi look first.

This is a 13 month fixed term role where you're a leader responsible for empowering the engineering team to deliver top-quality products that create value for customers, evolving our Engineering practices to increase our speed to customer value, and ensuring the long term health of our technology platforms. More importantly, you are developing technical leaders in your team to give them direction and guidance for future growth.

In this role, you predominantly focus on the Engineering Experience team. Working collaboratively with other engineering managers, you will articulate and plan for improving tools and platforms our engineers use on the path-to-production

Here's what you can expect from this role:

  • You're responsible for leading a team of engineers.
  • You work alongside other engineering managers and tech leaders to establish governance, guidelines, and guardrails across the organisation.
  • You work with people leaders to formulate upskilling, recruitment, and retention plans to serve your team's current and future skills needs.
  • You're responsible for aligning the technical direction in the Engineering Experience domain with our business strategy ambitions.
  • You maintain a productive, diverse, and psychologically safe working environment for development teams.
  • You coach or mentor LSEs and engineering leads to build their people management and technical leadership skills.
  • You ensure the team uses appropriate engineering practices, invests in continual improvements to tooling, manages technical debt, and that the system evolves to meet its changing needs and environment.
  • Your team is effectively balancing new product development and maintaining the health of our systems, striving to deliver customer value at an appropriate speed
  • The products your team delivers meet Trade Me's code quality, analytics, security, and performance standards.
  • You are looking ahead of the curve for new technologies and innovations to stay relevant to customers.
  • You ensure that incident management and operability of systems in the Engineering Experience space are undertaken based on our incident management policies and operational guidelines.
  • You're seen as a champion of our values, living these daily.
  • You will be the custodian of tools our engineers use on the path-to-production, including automation suite, CI/CD pipelines, and environments.
  • You ensure that automation and self-service are the priority in designing the pipelines and tools to reduce the cognitive load on our engineers and minimise coupling between teams.
  • You will continuously optimise the CI/CD pipelines to reduce the cognitive load and feedback loop for our engineers.
  • You will own the CI/CD pipeline component of our Thinnest Viable Platform Microservices and Trade Me Common apps.

What you will bring to our team:

  • An experienced practitioner (10+ years) in engineering practices; with strong technical skills and a deep understanding of architecture and engineering practices.
  • People's leadership experience (3+ years) of small to medium technical teams (5-7 people).
  • Strategic, with an ability to feed into Trade Me's overall strategy, build a clear technical vision, and the plan to get there and inspire a diverse team to achieve this.
  • Strong technical background: the ability to work with other technical leaders and PSEs around the business to formulate and establish high-impact architecture and technical practices.
  • Strong people leadership skills: the ability to build and maintain strong and high-performing teams.
  • A proven track record of successfully developing flexible value-driven product roadmaps to clarify where we are going, taking ownership of outcomes and delivering measurable results.
  • Experience with opportunity definition and discovery, opportunity trees, goal-oriented product roadmaps and using outcome-based metrics to measure the impact of change.
  • Strong understanding of platform engineering best practices and strategies for managing operational load..
  • Strong experience with microservice architecture and CI/CD pipeline best practices.
  • Deep understanding of engineering practices aligned with continuous integration & delivery principles.
  • Have strong and recent experience developing, testing, and deploying production-grade and scalable applications.

We know some candidates can be reluctant to apply for roles if they feel they don't "tick all the boxes". If you're excited about this opportunity, we'd still really like to hear from you.

Trade Me is an INZ accredited employer. We truly value diversity and embrace a flexible workplace where people are encouraged to achieve their potential
