As the Financial controller at Southland District Council you will be leading a dedicated team responsible for providing finance, revenue and accounting functions. Key to your success will be providing direction and support to ensure they have what they need to provide a customer centric service, sound financial advice and accurate reporting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • contributing to the development of and oversee implementation of financial strategies that will provide short and long-term financial stability for the organisation and ensure value for money return to ratepayers
  • lead the development of the Annual Plan and Long-Term Plan primarily around financial data, policies and rating information
  • monitor the financial health of Council and develop strategies to address potential opportunities and risks
  • ensure financial information is accurately presented in reports which promote transparency and ease of understanding by Council, elected members and stakeholders

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • extensive experience in providing financial insight and advice in complex organisations. Always being willing to challenge the status quo and proactively debate the issues
  • proven quantitative and qualitative analytical and evaluative skills with the ability to problem solve, make decisions and think creatively at a senior level.
  • have a continuous improvement mindset and be able to adapt quickly to evolving business needs
  • foster a culture of collaboration and partnerships with the ability to manage conflict constructively by identifying creative solutions that maintain positive relationships and drive shared success
  • demonstrate strong leadership skills to manage a team of finance professionals. This includes providing guidance, coaching and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning and promoting professional development within the team

About Council:

With 11% of the total land area of New Zealand, including Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island Rakiura, Southland District Council has the largest land area to manage of any territorial authority. Council not only encompasses the management and improvement of physical assets such as roads, bridges, water supply, cemeteries and parks but also the Southland communities' social, economic, cultural and environmental wellbeings.

Our 200+ staff are diverse in their backgrounds, skillset and location, spread across three Invercargill offices (Forth Street, 20 and 42 Don Street) and seven area offices situated at Riverton, Otautau, Te Anau, Winton, Oban, Lumsden and Wyndham.
