The Judge's Clerk will:

  • undertake legal research and policy development for the Principal Judge. assist with projects relating to the administration of the Youth Court, including the provision of legal advice on operational matters relevant to the Youth Court Judiciary. support the Principal Judge in her work for the District Court in developing initiatives. assist the Principal Judge with legal research to support judgment writing across jurisdictions including Youth, Criminal and Civil. keep up to date with changes in the common law and legislation relevant to the Youth Court. This may include writing and circulating explanatory memoranda either at the request of the PrincipalJudge or on own initiative. undertake administrative duties including organising and taking minutes for judicial committee meetings. research for and assist with preparation of Law Commission and Select Committee submissions, conferences, papers and speeches. respond to legal and procedural queries, including external queries. obtain judgments, legislation and articles as requested; and
- edit and publish "Court in the Act," a quarterly newsletter from the Principal Youth Court Judge.
The Judge's Clerk will report directly to the Principal Judge.
This position is based at the Chief District Judge's Chambers in Wellington.

He pūkenga tou/Skills and Experience

The successful applicant will have:

  • LLB degree with excellent academic achievement, particularly in Youth Justice and criminal lawgenerally. Electives such as criminal procedure, evidence, civil procedure, and Māori legal studies are of benefit.
  • Study in other branches of the humanities would also be an advantage. Excellent and accurate written and communication skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Experience with legal publications
  • Problem solving skills
  • Qualities such as selfmotivation, efficiency and initiative; the ability to work independently
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Strong community connections

Utu ā-tau/Salary
The starting salary is $65,845.00 with an opportunity to progress in six-monthly increments to $79,743.00.
