Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand Transpower Full time
Bring your expertise in the field of Routing, Switching, UC and WiFi

  • Mentor and coach a fairly new team and help build capability and knowledge
  • Complex multivendor environment with good technical challenges

Identify areas of improvement. Work closely with design teams to ensure a robust and highly available network that impacts New Zealand.
Transpower has a dual role as New Zealand's owner and system operator of the National Grid.

As the sole transmission network asset owner, we keep the energy flowing - transporting high voltage electricity from where it is generated to cities, towns, and some major industrial users.

About the team

Within our wider Information Services and Technology Division, the Network Services Team provides end to end planning, design, delivery, and operations across all Network Services (Telco, IP Network and Cisco) in a continual delivery model.

Our collaborative group provides cross-functional support across all levels of Service Delivery ranging from Incident and Problem Management, Change Management, Lifecycle Management, Request Fulfilment, Design and Deployment.

This encompasses Network connectivity and Unified Communications that span corporate, operational and Data Centre environments.

About the Opportunity

In this key role you'll identify areas which are putting our services at risk and initiate actions to remedy or mitigate this risk.

You'll undertake reviews of major events to identify root cause and improvement opportunities working within ITIL frameworks.

Troubleshooting comes naturally to you, so our complex multi-vendor network won't phase you as you identify issues in the LAN, WAN, WiFi, Unified Communications, Remote Access and Security networks, and work collaboratively with multiple teams to identify bottlenecks and other network configuration issues.

As a technical professional you'll lead advanced implementations of the company's network infrastructure, oversee business as usual workflow and provide mentoring and the technical escalation point for three other engineers.

You'll also consult in areas where the complexity is high and our margin for error is small.

While this is a Monday to Friday role ~40 hours per week, you'll participate in the on-call roster which is one seven-day week in a four-week cycle.

There are so many opportunities for improvement and many technical challenges, but when you nail it you will cement your role as our "go to" technical expert

What will you bring?
You'll have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including active listening. You'll be comfortable working with customers and colleagues at all levels.

Known for your ability to question the status quo, you bring new ideas and recommend procedures, technical standards and guidelines for better and more efficient outcomes.

Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate

  • CCIE Level certifications in both Routing/Switching and WiFi Technologies (ideally in a multivendor environment)
  • Expertise with Cisco enterprise LAN, WAN Unified Communications and WiFi
  • Strong problem solving and analytic skills and demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple assignment and urgent unplanned priorities
  • Concise written communication and the ability to clearly and concisely present ideas/opinions
  • Experience sharing technical knowledge and skills with other team members to develop capability

While not essential, further certification for other vendors such as Aruba, Juniper and F5 is highly desirable as is project management understanding in waterfall environments using agile techniques.

Join us at Transpower
