About the role
This is a rare opportunity to work at the leading edge of New Zealand Red Cell Serology testing.

The National Reference Laboratory is based in Epsom and has a strong team-based structure and performs a variety of pre-transfusion testing, involving in-depth analysis of the complex patient samples, resolution of complex antibody problems as well as the resolution of blood grouping anomalies, also undertaking reagent manufacture and the preparation of the National Immunohaematology Quality Assurance Programme.


You will be accountable to:

  • Confirm antibodies referred by testing laboratories
  • Investigate antibody problems and provision of crossmatched blood
  • Provision of phenotyped blood
  • Resolve ABO and Rh(D) typing problems
  • Monitor levels (by titration) of antibodies found during routine antenatal screening
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in a manner that complies with national defined quality standards, accreditation licensing and legislative requirements


The role will require you to participate, when competent, in a 24/7 out of hours on call service equally divided amongst the Reference team.


About you


We are currently looking for a Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our experienced Auckland team where you will be responsible for solving complex and difficult red cell antigen/antibody problems with the use of red cell genotyping and a unique collection of rare typing sera and rare red cells.


If you have a strong sense of professional responsibility and are able to work both independently and co-operatively as part of a small professional team, then we would like to hear from you.


In addition, you will also have the following:

  • Qualification in transfusion science or related discipline
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory technology practice and principles
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • High level of arithmetic ability
  • Sound computer literacy
