Te Whare o Ngā Kaihautū Waka o Te Kōti-ā-Rohe o Aotearoa) Office of the Chief District Court Judge provides administrative, operational and strategic support to the District Court Judicial Leadership team comprising the Chief District Court Judge, National Executive Judge, Principal Family Court Judge and the Principal Youth Court Judge.


Te Ao Mārama is a judicially led Kaupapa that will improve the experience for all people who participate in the court system, including victims and whānau.

By partnering with iwi and engaging with communities, Te Ao Mārama will be designed to best serve each community's specific needs.


Te Ao Mārama will mean that all people who come to court to seek justice will be seen, heard, understood and able to meaningfully participate.

Te Ao Mārama is inclusive of all people, no matter their means or abilities, regardless of their ethnicity or culture, and regardless of who they are or where they are from.

As the Judicial Education Lead, you will play a significant role in taking ownership of the development and delivery of education and professional development initiatives for the judiciary as part of the implementation of Te Ao Mārama across the District Court.

You will collaborate with Te Kura Kaiwhakawā, the Te Ao Mārama programme, Te Whare, and other Advisors to ensure the curriculum needs of all judges are met as part of the Te Ao Mārama programme and wider Te Whare work programme.


In addition to leading the development and delivery of education and professional development initiatives in support of the judiciary with Te Kura Kaiwhakawā, you will work across the Te Ao Mārama programme team, Ministry, and the legal profession to ensure consistency of training delivered for Court staff, agency partners, and the legal profession operating in the District Court.


Your role will also research and produce high-quality legal content in support of the Te Ao Mārama Handbook and associated judicial resources.

To be successful in the role you will bring the following skills and experience:

  • Experience leading and influencing during a time of significant change experience working collaboratively to achieve organisational outcomes.
  • A tertiary qualification in law, preferably at postgraduate level, coupled with at least eight to ten years' postgraduation experience in practice, legal policy, law reform, and/or academia
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively within Te Ao Māori and display core skills in te reo Māori and in tikanga Māori.
  • Proven record in building and managing strong stakeholder relationships including working with other agencies, service providers and key stakeholders.
  • Sound understanding of the constitutional principles and legal processes that underpin the New Zealand justice system.
  • Operational experience in a medium or large organisation, and demonstrated success in a senior management role, including planning and reporting, financial management, organisational leadership, and strategic management.
  • Ideally have experience in teaching/adult education
  • Subject matter expertise in criminal and/or family law
  • In depth knowledge of training and development and adult learning theory and practice.
  • Communicating with a wide range of audiences on a range of complex issues.
