He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Eke Panuku Development Auckland is Auckland Council's urban regeneration agency, and our vision is "Creating Amazing Places". Our mission is to rejuvenate urban Auckland - from small projects that refresh a site or building, to major transformations of town centres or neighbourhoods. We are creators, curators, and caretakers - creating legacies for generations to come.

We focus on projects that deliver more and better housing, better transport choices and ultimately more sustainable, resilient communities. To do this, we partner with the rest of the Auckland Council whānau, central government agencies, the private sector and communities.

We're looking for a Principal Communications and Engagement Advisor to join our communications and engagement team, with a specific focus on supporting our city centre and waterfront programmes.

You will be responsible for leading a small team of senior communications and engagement advisors, which collectively supports these two priority programmes. The role is equal parts people leadership and providing direct project support with high-quality, best practice communications and engagement.

You will also be comfortable and adept acting as a trusted advisor for senior leaders and influencing behaviour.

Reporting to the Head of Communications and Engagement, you will work collaboratively as part of a wider, high-performing team that collectively tells the stories of the positive change that is happening in some of Auckland's most loved neighbourhoods and urban centres.

With good project management skills and a solid understanding of the tools and techniques needed to run an effective public engagement process, you will be able to support project teams deliver on time and on budget – and support your team to the do the same. With a finely tuned risk and opportunity radar, you will be able to identify and mitigate risks early or identify and maximise storytelling opportunities where available.

  • Curious – You're inquisitive about our city and its many neighbourhoods, the many disciplines required to best serve our communities and urban regeneration in general.
  • Relationship-led – You have the skills to build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with a wide range of people from your priority location director to politicians, internal stakeholders, and community groups. Demonstrated knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and te reo Māori.
  • Strategic – You're able to identify any issues and risks and build plans to leverage or mitigate them.
  • Knowledgeable – You have deep knowledge and understanding of the public sector and Auckland local government context in particular.
  • Leadership-focused – You know how to manage, develop and champion a team.

We will be looking for specific experience with:

  • 10+ years' experience in strategic communications and engagement planning and delivery at principal or senior advisor level. People leadership experience is highly desirable, but not essential.
  • A tertiary degree in communications, engagement, public relations, journalism, marketing or a related discipline.
  • Experience in an account/relationship management environment.
  • Deep knowledge of, and experience with, communications and engagement tools, techniques, and channels.
  • Related specialist skills, e.g. marketing, event management, public relations, change communications.
  • Knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer
We're visionaries leading the way in sustainable urban development. You'll join a team embracing diversity with a culture built on its people spirit. Our salaries are competitive, we love flexible working and we're all here to inspire one another. This is your chance to make a positive contribution to the future of Tāmaki Makaurau.

In return for your hard work, you can expect a flexible and supportive work environment. Ehara taku toa, he takitahi, he toa takitini – My success is not mine alone, but the success of many. We aim to have a fun workplace where people have opportunities to learn and grow.

You'll have access to a range of fantastic Auckland Council benefits, including discounted leisure centre membership and a range of other partnership discounts
