Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
Central Region - Security Engineer


This role is part of the central region security team supporting districts from Wellington to Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, and Whanganui.

Primarily you will help build the central region security operations capability that supports the creation and ongoing maintenance of national cyber security initiatives.

You will be technical enough to roll out the security solutions but also be able to make them live and breathe by embedding supporting processes.


A large part of the role will be to lead and coordinate a regional incident response team taking on the responsibility of engaging with wider incident response functions allowing us to be ready for whatever comes next in the changing cyber security landscape.


This central region security engineer will have opportunities to engage and lead at all levels as part of our Data and Digital team, you will be key to ensuring the security and resilience of new and existing information technology services in Health New Zealand's Cyber Security Uplift programme.


Supporting the Regional CISO and providing advice on cyber security threat and vulnerability management, governance, risk and compliance, for Health New Zealand's sector-facing systems.

You will influence a 'secure by design' environment to meet the deliverables of the Cyber Security Uplift Programme.

Some of your responsibilites may include:

  • Designing and delivering technical outcomes that increase the maturity of cyber security of the organisation
  • Assisting with implementing and maintaining technical security standards and architecture
  • Designing and delivering technical outcomes that increase the maturity of cyber security of the organisation
at the regional and national level


Additionally, you will partner with technology security leads in the development of their security strategies, embed effective security management processes in all change programmes and maintain appropriate security standards in all systems development.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience:

  • Strong knowledge of leading cyber security practices in a hybrid environment of on-premise, SaaS, and cloud services
  • Understanding of security operations centre functions. What to monitor, how to monitor, and how to respond.
  • Strong technical background in particular on cloud based security incident and event managment
  • Experience with reviewing security configurations and design for a wide range of IT systems and services, including Windows, Linux, AIX, Databases (e.g. Oracle, MS SQL, DB2), containerization environments, AWS, Azure, and more.
  • Understanding of the Health Information Security Framework (HISF) and other applicable security standards.
Previous experience in government or health care sector is desirable for success in this role.
