Offender Employment (OE) is all about giving people in our care the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release.

Now is an exciting time to join us as a General Instructor at Rimutaka Regional Prison reporting directly to the Industry Manager.

There are so many facets to this role, the core job will have two key components.

  • Facilitating staff wellbeing through food orders and delivery from our onsite cafe to staff working within the prison, with the potential to be managing a vehicle to enable this. Experience as a Barista is an advantage.
  • Collecting and disposing of rubbish from around the site to one central location.

The training you provide will enable others to achieve Industry Training skills.

In providing a platform of good working habits to take forward to the future, you will further support rehabilitation and reintegration practices.

The role also provides support to the wider Offender Employment operation on occasion as part of the wider Offender Employment Team.

  • Qualification or experience in logistics.
  • Accreditation and/or similar adult training/teaching qualification an advantage
  • Outstanding H&S practices
  • Exceptional people management & communication skills
  • The ability to motivate and develop people within a team environment.
  • A Full Drivers Licence
  • Can remain positive and resilient in a constantly changing environment.
  • Barista or Café experience.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

As a General Instructor your core role is managing the refuse collection and staff meal deliveries, you will have custodial responsibilities, industry responsibilities (including Health and Safety) and training responsibilities.

Experience as an adult educator and NZQA Assessor is preferred. A full drivers licence and First Aid Certificate is required.
Instructors have the same classification as Correction Officers and, as such, complete the same initial training courses.
A comprehensive Frontline Introduction into Corrections and extensive initial training is provided for the successful applicant.

This will involve on-site training at Rimutaka Prison as well as residential in-house training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, to focus on the custodial elements of the position.

The Department of Corrections manages offenders to ensure they comply with their sentences. At its core, our work is about creating opportunities, for our people as well as offenders. We need people of all skills and life experience to help us create these opportunities. The hours of work will be 5:30am - 1:30pm Monday to Friday, 80 hours per fortnight. The ability to work Public Holidays, with the possibility of some overtime or call-outs may be required.
The starting salary for this role is $67,514 per annum. Subject to skills and experience this may be raised to $75,876 per annum for the successful applicant.
